"I make
my way through the dark corridors of the abandoned space
colony, the drone of the generators and the pulsing of my
proximity detector my only company. A blip appears on the
viewer, 30 yards away and getting closer, followed by two
more. There is no available cover, nowhere to hide. The
detector shows multiple signals right on top of me and I
still don't see anything. Panic starts to set in."

"If you're
a typical game player, you already know the story and concept
behind Aliens versus Predator. You've seen the movies, read
the comic books, played with the toys, and maybe even helped
Jesse Ventura become governor of Minnesota. In 1994, Rebellion
software created what is generally considered to be one
of the ill-fated Atari Jaguar's best games and the definitive
use of the license to date, Alien versus Predator. Five
years later, the company has remade the game for the PC,
bringing half a decade of technology and gameplay advancements
to bear on its previous effort, and the result is excellent."

"Well,
there's no movie out on this premise yet, but Fox Interactive
and British developer Rebellion have delivered on a first
person shooter for us - Aliens vs. Predator. Combining the
two greatest sci-fi action movies of all time, Aliens and
Predator, the game has received a huge amount of hype and
anticipation over the last several months. And with good
reason! The two films came out within a year of each other
in the late eighties, and for over a decade, fans have clamored
for Fox to bring to two together. 12 years after Predator
and 3 bad sequels later (Predator 2, Alien3, and Alien Resurrection),
we've got a first person game to play on the PC."

"Remember
Bill Paxton as the whimpering Private Hudson in the classic
James Cameron film Aliens? "Game over, man! We're dead!"
I have always scorned Hudson for not showing more courage
against the Alien hordes. Until recently. Now that I have
endured the same terrors and battled the same impossible
odds as that notorious doomsayer, I have a newfound appreciation
for the deep-rooted fear he was experiencing. I thought
his overwhelming sense of dread would subside when I reversed
into the role of the Alien, but found myself more unsettled
than ever and battling even greater odds, despite the fact
that I was now supposed to be the scary one."

"Fox really
has spoiled itself down the years, hasn't it? A good selection
of high-quality sci-fi films has made the big golden 20th
Century Fox logo a recognised image at cinemas and in the
home. So, it stands to reason that they would want to rub
everybody's noses in it by combining two of their biggest
hits into a computer game. But what is mildy surprising
is the fact that they've actually done it rather well."

"Like
most of my reviews, I like to start off on a nostalgic foot.
Remember watching Aliens and seeing that second jaw come
out at Ripley in the shower scene? Or going to big Arnold
in Predator with that oh-so-cool, state-of-the-art heart
vision effects?"

"Imagine
if we lived in a world where every product we purchased
was made with love and a keen eye toward functionality and
design. Imagine it… every bed we slept on would be down
and silk, every sheet of fake vomit would make our eyes
roll deep into their sockets to shield themselves from the
horror, and every videogame we bought would be better than
the last. Life would be good. Sadly though, this is just
an unrealized vision in a world that is not ideal. That
fake vomit at the store is a poor imitation, and a good
game is often hard to come by."

- created on April 13, 1999 by Mikael
"While
the name indicates the game is an equal mix of alien and
predator the actual game is more like Aliens with the option
being a predator in the world where aliens and marines fight
each other. If you play as a marine or an alien you meet
only a few predators during the entire game and most of
the environments come from the alien movies so don't expect
any thick jungles or any environments from Los Angeles (Predator
2)."

"Aliens
VS. Predator; the game concept alone has made grown men
weep tears of joy. What fan of the films does not want to
go on a trophy hunt for prey or sink their second set of
jaws into their enemy? At one point, Activision was working
on it… but alas, it never happened. The Atari Jaguar tried
it, but have you heard of the Atari Jaguar? Now, Fox Interactive
makes a noble stab into first-person territory but is it
any better?"

"Ever
since I saw the first Alien film I have wanted to be thrusted
into that cinematic dimension myself and become embroiled
in the ever-expanding plot. When Aliens came I found myself
wanting to strap into a pulse rifle and run along side my
comrades laying waste to all that crossed my path. Then
came Predator, a film that made us all want to wear infrared
goggles and tout plasma cannons on our arms and quite make
unusual clicking sounds. Since then there have only been
two games that even came close to bringing that tense, frightening
and unique atmosphere to our screens. That of Aliens vs
Predator on the Atari Jaguar and 'Alien Trilogy' on the
PC/PSX a couple of years back. Sadly technology wasn't enough
at the time to truly bring you universe of AvP home, it
was tense, but never were they realistic or did present
the true atmosphere. Perhaps the closest we came to a true
Aliens came was 'Alien Quake'. AQ was a modification to
Quake, which was banned by Fox and the author was apparently
employed by them (maybe he worked on AvP?). So now after
many years, Rebellion and Fox bring us what many hope to
be the definitive Aliens vs Predator universe game."
