Aliens vs. Predator II Tactics - Part One

With Primal Hunt coming out soon, I thought I’d take the time and let the new guys in on some alien tactics. If you’re not new, still read on, since there's some things you might not know yet.

I am not responsible for how you use these tactics. If someone claims you are cheating, too bad; it’s not my fault.

In multi-player, the class you pick is as important as choosing whether to pay the bills or not. Here is a breakdown of the multi-player classes.

Runner - If you are a runner, the best thing for you to do is to use your speed. You will never be able to take on an enemy head on (trust me, first hand experience has taught me this), so learn each level to be able to get behind your foe. And figure out which surface you can and can’t walk on. Things like that.

Once you’ve got the maps down, find good ways to get behind a person. You’re behind them… now what? You have a few choices here. You can be alien-like and pounce to stun them, or use your speed to run past them while clawing them to pieces. It only takes some health out, but do this a few times and they’ll never know what hit them.

If you chose to pounce, remember that even though they're stunned, they can still fire. So, always stay behind them and have at their ankles!

Drone - The drone is a perfect mix between speed and strength (strength meaning resistance to bullets). I prefer using the drone in crouch mode, but that’s just me. Basically, never attack straight-on unless you know you’ll win, much like the runner.

The drone can take more of a beating, but not all that much. The best weapon the alien has is “the element of surprise” - move fast and strike hard. The drones can somewhat do both.

It's best take an enemy out from behind, rather than face down a mini-gun or a damn disc. Much like the runner. Also as a drone, you should try not to stay on the ground; wall-walk as much as you can, which the marine’s radar can’t tell whether you're on the ground or on a wall/ceiling.

Predalien - Even though it's slower than the drone or runner, the predalien has major pounce ability to make up for that. This is perfect for those that enjoy playing tricky games (as do I). For example, if you’re looking at a marine that'is on the other side of a canyon, pounce toward them but angle up; with practice, you should fall right in front of them but not on the same cliff they’re on. They’ll fire a few shoots, but gravity helps you out, and most likely they won't hit nothing but air. As soon as you hit the ground look straight up and pounce again, you should land either on top of them of in front -- “the element of surprise” remember?

All of this should take place in about three seconds. So in a matter of ten minutes, you could rack up 200 kills.

Praetorian - Think of a bank's armored truck - slow, takes a beating to bring down, and when it’s coming at you, you’re going to run. That’s the Praetorian; it’s the semi-truck of aliens.

Disc-Dodging - The best class for disc-dodging is the predalien; the pounce capability makes this a hell of a lot easier. Keep your distance from predators until you can use “the element of surprise”. If you see the disc coming, hopefully you’re far enough away to have about 5 seconds to react: look straight up, and pounce... the disc most likely won’t hit you.

Remember though: no guarantees.

Here are some other views and tactics worth taking a shot (the only changes have been grammar and spelling):

Tactics huh? Hmm. Well I can play as any species but I wouldn’t recommend my marine and predator tactics to anyone (they suck). Now aliens I know a thing or two about. They say the main powers of the alien are speed, agility, and stealth. There aren’t many places to use stealth so far (to the point where your nearly cloaked in your surroundings), except colony. What you should do though is try to move by walls as often as possible, because although enemies may expect aliens to be there, your much safer than on flat ground. In areas like the outside of compound and areas of depot, do not constantly pounce and claw in the direction of your prey. Try approaching it, and pounce at it from a safe distance. If you are spotted, you shouldn’t pounce directly at it, the enemy will have just as much direct fire on you as when your standing still. You will most likely be torn to pieces before you reach them. Try pouncing onto a wall behind them or somewhere out of sight, then pounce back at them from the wall. You will probably hit him before he realizes where you are or can land a lot of firepower. Pouncing like this is a great way to get prey confused and disoriented, they will spend more time trying to find you than aiming at you, and that's always a good thing. Another thing, AI aliens are stupid, never mimic their tactics.
On a stunned victim, always, ALWAYS pay attention to the direction he is spinning and stay behind him. If he has a grenade launcher, rocket launcher, or pulse grenades, he will probably blow himself and you to bits, but it's a risk worth taking.
Now Predators. I find predators easier to kill, probably because of their lack of anti alien weapons, and specialized vision modes. Predators don’t move around as much as marines, and if you see one camping attack him immediately (preferably with a pounce). If he is camping chances are very good he doesn’t see you yet and is in marine mode. This way you can get the first attack and stay in close (homing weapons don’t work very well at very close range). If he were in alien mode, he'd know your about to attack and start moving and firing. Normally, if you try the marine fighting tactics on a predator, he'll destroy you pretty quickly with a homing weapon. Always keep moving when battling marines and predators.
I hardly ever play DM, but I do find alien vs. alien battles very fun. I don’t have any useful info on fighting other bugs, but I'd like to hear other people's tactics. Oh, and by the way, these tactics are based on my experiences as a drone. Predalien, Praetorian, and runner tactics may differ.
Ok, my fingers are hurting, I'll stop typing now.”

“Well my tactics as a predator are elementary, but I do have some useful info on all species. Predators are slow (to a degree) their ability to cloak gives them the advantage and disadvantage of any fight. When fighting marines always think ahead and take action before they do. When cloaked if you stay still you’re completely invisible. Always, always (with any species) stay away from head on attacks unless you absolutely have to. The motion trackers can be a bitch for cloaked predators. Also as with other threads on this form, use the smart disk to your advantage. If you miss with the smart disk pray you can get him on the way back. Wrist blades and the combo-stick work best for up close battles, combo-stick is kind of slow but causes more damage, the wrist blades are fast but cause less damage. The Spear Gun is a nice sniping tool but watch for low ammo because once you’re out your out. I haven't really used any of the other weapons yet. Now marine might be easy but for the most part everyone is going to come after you. It sucks I know but you have many tools to your advantage. The pulse rife is best at long ranges and the shotgun can often put an enemy on the ground in one shot. The flashlight's batteries don't last long so use it wisely and keep it charged. The grenade launcher (In my opinion) is for when you’re desperate, as well as the pistol (as you can see I don't play marine much). Now aliens are fun! (Some) Aliens are fast, they have the ability to climb walls and the night vision comes in handy all the time. Aliens are best used like Metal Head said, on the wall or ceiling. Sure the predators and marines will expect you there but that puts more fear into them. I like to play with people's minds in sp and mp. Striking fear into them (especially noobs) is a lot of fun. But for the avp2 war gods its going to be harder but they'll still be afraid of dieing. I've given you all I pretty much know about all three species, and my own experience.”
