AvP Requiem - The Battle Continues!

It's
great to see our beloved Aliens and Predators kickin' it up
for another cinema 'bout... these sci-fi titans are looking
in fine form in the AvP Requiem trailer.
The trailer has visual energy right out of Aliens with a definitive
Predator tip -- and the "Kelly O'Brien" character definitely
channels "Ripley" in both look and panache in the trailer.
However...
I thought of my initial viewing of the Alien 3 trailer when
viewing this... at the time of Alien 3, the trailer looked
incredible -- a sequel potentially worthy of it's predecessors..
yet when I attended the premiere in LA, many (including myself)
thought, as well as many viewers have since, that it was lacking
(though Fincher certainly excelled with all that he had his
disposal at the time -- especially in lieu of all of the production
difficulties surrounding Alien 3). The incredible visual style
did not have a solid story to carry it.
The same goes for Alien Resurrection and the first AvP movie
-- both have held great style and flash... but one wonders if
the saga now has "fruit that has fallen too far from the tree"
in many respects... one can't help but think of where the series
could have gone had the movie series had the likes of Weaver,
Scott, and Cameron still involved (and all of them have expressed
interest in an Alien 5 -- however, it is obviously cheaper with
Fox to go the route they are sans them).
So we are left to cinematically encounter and explore the Aliens
and Predators in the AvP movie format -- which, all in all,
I find an interesting story avenue as well (as graphic novels
and video games have established along with the first AvP movie)
-- yet, taking the Aliens out of the future has it's own set
of issues and anachronisms -- and with AvP Requiem being set
present day in a small US town... well... it's like saying...
hey, instead of Anakin and Obi-Wan doing their final battle
on the lava planet Mustafar in "A Galaxy, Far, Far, Away..."
let's make their final battle be present day on top of a 7-11
wielding slurpees instead of lightsabers to save money!
AvP
Requiem is a "safe" tried and true scenario for horror --
teenagers mercilessly being pursued and chased in a small
town by terrorizing force(s), one wonders if Michael Myers,
fresh from his Zombie Halloween remake, will make
an appearance in the film... After this movie, Fox needs to
let our E.T.'s "go back home" to space -- that's where
they came from, and that's where they belong.
The movie 300 has shown us filmmakers don't need to
abscond to far off countries or locations to create vivid
and rockin' settings and environments to tell a story... using
the production style and integrity of filmmaking as seen in
300 -- the possibilities for cinematic stories for
Aliens and Predators are endless... and provides the gateway
in which to best serve these incredible creatures and return
the saga to where it needs to be.
