E3 Diary:
Predator Game

Saturday
Well,
in just over 12 hours Ill be airborne and on my way
to the big event. I have until then to familiarize myself
with the gear Ill be packing. Ive borrowed a
laptop and digital camera in exchange for loaning my desktop
out. The main complaint so far is that the laptop has a
tiny keyboard and a small hard drive. The camera has a 256
MB memory card, plus another 256 in my flash drive.
Despite the odd keyboard, I will keep a diary of my travels
in the land of LA and Ill have it posted on Planet AvP,
the fine Web site that most of you are reading this on right
now. Since the expo doesnt start until Wednesday,
Ill begin by describing my elaborate preparations.
I have a ticket to LA, with a connection through Salt Lake.
Granted, I live one state from California, but this way
it's dirt cheap. I also have a six-day reservation at an
airport hotel and a short bus ride from the convention center.
Im packing light; only taking a flight sim, the gold
edition of Ghost Recon, Mechwarrior 3, and
Mechcommander 2 to carry me through the wait. Im
pretty excited, so I probably wont get any Ghost
Recon gaming in, but I may as well try.
Im also taking 2 DVDs; since I dont have the
Aliens collection and havent been able to get Predator,
Im taking the second The Lord of the Rings
movie and a copy of Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back.
Classic movies, but Ill only be able to watch them
on the plane in power saving mode so I dont drain
the battery on this machine too fast. Ive also got
3 hours of imported Anime on the hard-drive and about 2
hours of music -- mostly Anime.
What games do I hope to see at E3? The new Predator game,
for starters. Aside from that, Ill try to check out
the new Microsoft
games, as well as some niche products that Im interested
in. Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 are also on my
list, but more as an obligation as a gamer than any real
enthusiasm. The technology just seems somewhat of a waste
to me, and I think that realistically, Unreal is the engine
of the next decade.
Ill have to check out how the booth-babes are this
year. I hear Playboy is going to send a pair of centerfolds
over, too. Despite the enormity of it all, Im not
sure on how Ill really react. I hope to God that Im
not reduced to a drooling fan boy, but only time will tell
if I pull off the suave gamer act.
Well, thats enough for now. Ill try to write
more when Im on the plane.
Wednesday
Well, today I got up bright and early to get there before
the show started. I headed up to check out the new Predator
game in the Vivendi
booth. The game certainly seems impressive visually, with
some interesting cut scenes and good effects for the vision
modes.
As a third-person console game, though, it does have the
traditional camera issues -- with the camera sometimes becoming
completely useless. It also seemed a little choppy at times,
but thats a common issue with prerelease games and
will be fixed by the final version.
While that was all quite cool, I decided to wander off to
see some more booths; three hours and around 100 games later,
I was exhausted and headed back to the GameSpy
meeting rooms to rest and recharge my laptop.
