Characters? What Characters?

Should you own the great pleasure of being able to play the game, Aliens vs. Predator 2, then you will know that there is a selection of characters in which to choose from, when playing a multiplayer game. When I join one of the hundreds of different games hosted in the AvP universe, I notice only four of these types are ever used. I hope it is not just me who feels that AvP has been exposed to the public for too long. I first knew something was wrong, when I told by a “n00b” that they could hit a runner alien on the other side of the map, while moving with the sniper and not using the scope.

Without further ado, I leapt into Microsoft word crying “Holy brain dead n00bs batman!”, and began to type. So what about the people who care about the game, the people who still believe, in “Aliens vs. Predator” to be a characterized game? A game that gives them a feeling of either, dominance over the weaker species or that of being able to hunt others, and cause panic and sometimes terror in their opponents mind. Have we looked so deeply into this game that we are missing the point entirely? One thing is for sure, there are more and more “Ultimate Fraggers” out there these days than there are players with character.

As times change for the game, so will the players, but unless the next in line to the sequel has some drastic changes to it then it will loose the people who it means the most to. The most widely used human character, is the Sniper. We all know that, and some have adapted to it, but if that was all, then it wouldn’t be in this article. I would like to ask anyone who plays sniper, why they play as sniper. If it is because it: “kicks ass”, “is the reason why I’m top of the score board” or “STFU, JOO n()()8 r0x0r y0or b0x0r” then that player should not be playing the game. Well two of them shouldn’t, the other belongs in a padded cell.

Do not get me wrong, I know many people who are snipers and I like them, but I don’t like the way they play. If I ever saw a man, leaping around in the middle of a war zone firing blindly at an enemy with a sniper rifle, then I would accept the Ichiro character. But I don’t. I do not wish to curse every player who does not play in character, but if the game is going to be anything like what we wanted it to be like, when it first emerged, then these things need to change.

My second point is on the Alien players. Once again, it is not entirely the players fault they play how they do, if they have found a way to stay alive for a little while longer and gain just that one more frag, then good for them. This is still not how you play as an alien, pouncing at a player and backing off, to recharge you pounce, just to strike again, and isn’t what an alien would do.

Maybe I’m wrong about the players, and the characters, maybe it’s the game creators fault for not thinking enough when they designed it. But it still does not explain why we have to play the game how we are made to. I know a predator player who can kill an alien, while it pounces at him, with a single shot from a spear gun. I think he spends too much time playing, but I also think is a good player. But if he keeps doing this? That technique is a defence technique, to attack, you need to show no fear, determination and be in the knowledge that you are going to win the fight.

“How do I do this?” The answer is simple. Melee. I would be very impressed if I saw that sniper predator using melee as well as his defence technique. But I don’t, I see, predators staying perfectly still, while cloaked, and using their awesome experience on the game to sniper people as they pass. Where is the fun in that? Well it appears at the end of the match, when the said players name is at the top of the score board.

The last point in my rant; is about player stupidity. The next game needs, no must have the option that, when a player is dead, they are dead. An objective game type would solve so many problems. Many have the time when I have approached a player only to have him/her fire their rocket launcher onto the ground below them, killing their selves and me in the process. I have not found one person who has said they would do that in life.

And so ends my ramblings on today’s players, I would be surprised if anyone read this far into the rant, but thank you for listening. And reading, thanks for that as well…
