Not skins, maps or sounds; but genuine mods. What we're talking here about are full-figured modifications, with all the trimmings, that provide Aliens vs. Predator with a multitude of new features. And we're talking about our job of reviewing them.

The Mod of the Week is released once a week, each time reviewing a new mod we consider the best from that week. While being chosen as MODotW is an honor in itself, our reviews are also fair and balanced; by pointing out both the good and the bad.

All review scores are based from a possible five points:

(5/5)

If you know of a mod good enough to be Mod of the Week, please tell us about it.

The Mod of the Week is posted every Saturday.

Nalesha Mod - January 20, 2007 by Izzy

"What do you get when you throw Aliens, Predators, weapons from Doom 3, and a rocket launcher that shoots facehuggers? A freaking Mod of the Week! This one fell into my lap from the powers above; not God or Allah, but Shipley threw this at me and told me to review it.

"Well, I was a little unsure getting into it. Then the killing started."

Survival of the Fittest - February 22, 2006 by Izzy

"Looking around on the Internet for mods is getting harder and harder now; making my job harder and harder. But as long as I get paid, I’ll shut up and do my job.

"Wait...I don’t get paid...

"Well anyways, this mod is really two in one: Survival of the Fittest 2.0 and the patch 2.1. It’s a neat mod and loads of fun."

Naughty - January 21, 2006 by Izzy

"I decided to check my mail over the holiday break and I saw that David has sent me an email entitled, “Must Review.” I’m on holiday break, so I might as well look at it at least, I thought.

"When I opened the email, I knew I was in trouble. At this moment, I hope that my girlfriend isn’t reading this page. The Naughty/Nude mod is what it does; it gives you skins to have playable characters nude."

Dual Pistols - December 10, 2005 by Izzy

"'Hey, Izzy, bring your cure for Mod of the Week blues.'

"The mod this week's tons of fun. It’s called Dual Pistols, and it's not hard to figure what it does; it gives you dual pistols. Great huh? The idea was taken from Primal Hunt, which as we all know, had cool new weapons and little else."

Fisheye Vision - December 03, 2005 by Izzy

"Hey, everyone! It’s that time again for Mod of the Week. I found this mod last week, and it caught my eye. It’s called Fisheye Vision and all it does is change the standard vision for the Alien to be more like the one in Alien 3. It is a very small modification, but it’s done right, so the player doesn’t notice unless you really look."

Bloody Tears Pack - November 26, 2005 by Izzy

"Happy Day after Thanksgiving, everyone! Izzy is back and here to review some mods. It has been a long time away from the Planet AvP office, but I'm back.

"Ya'll are probably wondering why I'm not doing the Pilot Project Test Mod. Here's the reason: it's a test mod. I wanted to, but I knew Shipley would get mad at me for giving one mod two reviews. *Grin*

With that, I give you the Bloody Tears Pack - a fun and interesting sound, skin, and HUD pack."

AJL Modification - October 29, 2005 by Alain

"Around the month of May 2005, in our forums, JThePrayer created a thread announcing the release of his and Alien JL’s newest mod, the AJL Modification. Not thinking much about it, I ignored it, figuring it was just another mod that someone thought was so amazingly well done they were attempting to promote it. A day later, J messages me and asks me to check out the mod for him and give him some feedback for a future patch."

UFO: Alien Invasion - Christmas Edition - January 08, 2005 by Windebieste

"Sometime early last year, I reviewed a neat little piece of free gaming currently under development called UFO: Alien Invasion. This work-in-progress game is based on the classic old Microprose title, UFO: Enemy Unknown. This surprisingly promising turn-based strategy title uses the aging Quake 2 engine with superb results. Well, it seems that the team working on this item has decided to give the gaming world a new slice of their turn-based, alien-blasting joy by giving us a special Christmas Edition of UFO: Alien Invasion."

Third-Person View - December 11, 2004 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"Have you ever wondered how we reviewers and those crazy mod-makers get those incredible 3rd-person views in AvP2? Some probably think we use a second computer with AvP2 installed and just take screenshots in free-fly mode. You’re wrong. The experts use a simple modification that, tonight, you’re going to learn how to do."

"What could this be? A Mod of the Week? Never! I’m afraid so, people. We’re back, and while not exactly in black, our varying shades of green and gray will have to suffice. And to top it all off, we actually have a mod that’s been reviewed! OMG! So, sit back, relax, get yourself some nice, warm hot chocolate, and enjoy our review of the AXP Extreme Version 1.0 mod."

"I will try to put those thoughts into words, try to even scratch the tip of the PROJAM iceberg and explain to you, the fans, what this mod will offer. But know this, even before we begin, whatever content I am able to fit into this review, is only barely 1/5 of that which is included in the mod."

PROJAM 3 Realism Pack - April 03, 2004 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"Long considered dead, the PROJAM team has come back from a lengthy hibernation to release their new and improved mod, version 3. This time, they’re packing more than just skins.

"Quite simply put, this mod changes everything. From intro and loading screens, to weapon animations, to sounds, to skins, to the occasional nuclear warhead, the changes are so numerous that there is barely any of the original game left.

"Let’s get started."

UFO - Alien Invasion - March 13, 2004 by Windebieste

"Okay, so it's not directly related to Aliens vs. Predator, but UFO - Alien Invasion does have Aliens... and features Marines gunning them down. Oh, and it's also got vehicles that look all-too-suspiciously like USCMC Dropships. It's a technical demo of an upcoming free-to-public remake of an old, classic, turn-based, tactical bug-hunt game, X-Com/UFO - Enemy Unknown."

"Welcome back to the MODotW. Yes, I know I missed last week, but I have a good excuse: I just can’t remember what it is.

"Anyway, thankfully Rob the Worm was capable of filling in for me, so we had a nice break between our two MODotWs.

Cons Mod - January 24, 2004 by Rod the Worm

"Hello. All you people who scan for new mods on the Internet, welcome to this week’s Mod of the Week! This is my first review in my new position on the Planet AvP staff, but hopefully not the last…

"Well, anyway, the best mod I found out there this week was by this guy, Panda. I hadn’t seen any other mods by him, so thought I would give him a go. And I’m thankful I did. His mod is called, 'Cons Mod,' due to it allowing you to play as a team of convicts busting out of prison; or as the the cops - Rykov, Dimitri, Ivan, Hall, Dunya, Chekov and Johnson - seeking to catch them."

AXP1097F - January 07, 2004 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"This is the first half of a two-part MODotW extravaganza, showcasing the newest and best modifications to be released in the community: the server-side mods.

"It seems the AXP team has pulled another rabbit out of their infinitely deep hat of tricks. This time, it's in the form of spawn-protection. That's right: no more bugs chewing on you even as you spawn, or predators lopping your head off while you log in. No more SADAR-up-the-left-nostril treatment when you go to take out the trash. Just good, clean, server-side fun."

AvP2 Gold Version 2.4 - November 15, 2003 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"Yo, what up -- I mean, welcome to another exciting episode of the MODotW, Z! On our last episode, SMIDku was left without anything to review, and was forced to twiddle his thumbs for two weeks! But now, the evil Bloody Tears has arrived, ready to send his moddy minions across the face of the planet; showering the community with their enhancements!

"Or something like that.

"What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is Bloody Tears' baby. A cute little mod by the name of, 'AvP 2 Gold Version 2.4.' Not to be confused with the AvP 2: Gold Edition, this is a modification and not the re-release of AvP2 from Fox Interactive, as some have suggested.

"Now, sit back and enjoy this review, as we bring you the many pros and very few cons of this MODotW."

Mod Manager - May 31, 2003 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"I’m sure if you’ve played as many modifications as me, you’re 'Aliens vs. Predator 2/Custom' folder is chock-full of junk that you don’t dare touch. You don’t know what makes what run, what’s running on spit and fervent prayer, and you’d rather not delete something, just to have your favorite mod not work. Instead, you allow the folder to conjugate all sorts of mods, skins, and maps, and finally, your AvP2 folder is three gigabytes, and your computer is giving you the finger every time you boot up.

"Well, Meercat, over at AvP Nation, has up with a nifty way to solve those 'Too-Many-Mods-and-Crap-Blues'. Here, now, fresh out of the box, with a nifty new update, is Meer’s Mod Manager."

AXP: Lethal Tournament - April 26, 2003 by Shoot Me I'm Dumb

"Aliens versus Predator 2 was released quite a while back, but remains one of the best FPS’s out there. Now, I wasn’t around to see it’s birth, because I was too busy playing Unreal Tournament. And I’m sorry I missed it. But I intend to make up for that right here and now, by reviewing the game. No, not the actually game, but small modifications that you, the player, can do by yourself to keep it fun. Most of us couldn’t find our way out of a wet paper bag, much less work Editing Tools and Modding Utilities. Therefore, we can’t make the fancy levels and amazing mods we read about from day to day.

"But, I guarantee you; read this short review, and you’ll be set to host and remain unlagged like the big boys. Let’s get into this!"

AvP2: Special Edition Version 2 - February 23, 2003 by Tony Volk

"Infamous Andy has devoted a lot of time to bring his own vision of game balance to AvP2. Andy appears to have chosen to aim for realism as well as game balance. And for a game that has some pretty fierce some opponents, that can be a very tricky thing indeed. Especially when those opponents use futuristic technology and/or are of another species! So how has Andy changed the game? Primarily by tweaking the player classes.

"Let’s take a look at his work.

"Woohoo, look at this, another MODotW already. Let’s get this party started. This week, we have a nice little mod from the great Facehugger Yes, it’s a slightly older mod, but well worth the download. The name of the mod is Acid Destruction, and while the acid is a major part of it, that’s not all it contains. With a nice collection of skins, sounds, and alien add-ons, this mod has its good points. Then again, it does have bad points as well. But more on that later."

[WPC] UHED Mod - June 01, 2002 by SirYawnalot

"Well, last week there was a case of having almost no new mods to review. This situation has since gotten even worse: there is nothing new this week. Nada. Zip. So today, Mod of the Week is reaching its eerily long, thin fingers into the dense mists of time to reveal something very ancient which somehow managed to miss most peoples' attention the first time around. Another mod by Webley (under the clan-tag of Wolf Pack Clan), this one being a balancing mod which alters certain aspects of the Beautiful Game to make it more balanced."

MoviesMOD - May 25, 2002 by SirYawnalot

"Last week, almost no new mods have leapt screaming from their development eggs to implant AvP2 players with groovy new features. Red Dwarf Mod - April 06, 2002 by Praetor

"The Red Dwarf Mod is essentially a mod for the Marine section of AvP2. It is unlike most mods out there in that it doesn’t change player classes or game modes, but focuses on giving a new appearance to the game based on the television show. A fabulous new HUD has been created, along with a couple of excellent skins, and, perhaps the most popular, a brand-spanking new weapon!"

"The three inter-linking campaigns that made up AvP2’s thrilling single player experience was somewhat disappointing in the discovery that you were alone throughout the majority of the game.
