Introduction

Long considered dead, the PROJAM team has come back from a lengthy hibernation to release their new and improved mod, version 3. This time, they’re packing more than just skins.

Quite simply put, this mod changes everything. From intro and loading screens, to weapon animations, to sounds, to skins, to the occasional nuclear warhead, the changes are so numerous that there is barely any of the original game left.

Let’s get started.

Welcome to the Jungle

Minigun rounds tear through the air; high-pitched shrieks of speeding steel that make your ears ring. Across the map, a mercenary sniper and her backup, a minigunner, are laying down suppressing fire. Your team is dwindling in numbers, and the damn bugs are everywhere. One of men leaps up to avoid a runner - and takes a sniper round through the brain.

Then, there is an inhuman roar... and the minigun cuts out. Several sniper shots ring out, then silence falls on the map. A Yautja hunter uncloaks just over your head and three small red dots light up on your chest, tracking up towards your head. You stare, dumbfounded as the barrel of the hunter’s shoulder cannon begins to glow blue.

Then, Player_0, the idiot standing just behind you, fires off his nuke. It is then that you realize, as your corpse is incinerated in the resulting blast, that this is PROJAM’s mod and you really should kick team killers.

Humans

Aside from a new starting screen and new sounds for the menus, as well as new background music and loading screens, the upper levels of the game remain largely the same. I must say, though, that the new Hicks skin on the single-player race selection screen is awesome.

Once you get into the actual gameplay, you find that little is as it originally was.

First, the new and improved marine weapons. The marine knife is still the same net-slicing, head-chopping, useless backup weapon that it always was; the pistol has received a new skin and firing sound; the shotgun has lost its secondary slug-firing ability, but gained a new skin and sound.

The pulse rifle, after receiving a new skin and movie-realistic sound effect, has lost the ability to be stagger-fired (thanks to some nifty model work by the PROJAM team) and has been bumped from its eight-grenade maximum load-out... to four. On top of that, the pulse rifle has new gravity-realistic grenades and a new grenade animation that is movie-realistic.

The grenade launcher now has a new sound that is far more realistic than the original. It also sports two new grenade types. Smoke grenades create huge amounts of blanketing smoke that no vision mode can see through, but that can be tracked through with tracking weapons; nerve gas grenades create a green smog of deadly smoke that lasts for around four-and-a-half seconds; it causes damage for about twenty seconds.

The flamethrower has a new, more sticky flame and a sound that I, personally, do not like. It sounds rather cheap, though the original sound was not much better.

The new SADAR tracks as usual, but also doubles as a nuclear missile launcher. This weapon causes extreme amounts of damage and is a lot of fun, so we’ll just let you experiment with it yourself.

The new minigun fires two-to-three rounds at a time, now, and kicks more. On top of that, it has a new sound and an almost explosive type of ammo.

The sniper rifle kept its original sound, but now does less damage; it will kill in two body shots, or one head shot on almost every character.

To add to all the weapon enhancements, there are also movie-realistic skins for all marine characters. The corporates also got new skins, though theirs is more cosmetic than movie-realistic.

Predators

Our Yautja friends did not escape the modification fairy, it seems, and have received some upgrades of their own. First and foremost, all the predator’s weapons received new sounds and a few received modifications to make them more balanced.

First up for modification is the plasmacaster. As we all know, this weapon was originally a plasma-whore’s wet dream. Now, the tracking has been completely removed and it no longer uncloaks you when fired, making it a much more balanced weapon.

Also modified was the disc, by far the most used weapon in the game. While the disc still can be recalled, it no longer takes an energy bar or two. Instead, is sucks up ten energy bars, meaning that it would be better for you predator players to go pick it up. If the disc goes off the screen and has to be teleported back, it costs twenty energy bars.

It still uncloaks predators and will no longer kill in one shot. However, it now has a really nice-looking blue trail and can possibly bounce a dozen or more times off the walls. While play-testing, I actually lost my disc as it bounced pinball-style away down the corridor.

Final Word

An awesome mod by the PROJAM team that practically sneaked up on us. When they set out to do something, they accomplish it beautifully. I feel privileged at being given the honor of reviewing it.
