With so many maps out there today, it's hard to know which ones are worth downloading. If there was only some kind of weekly review service that could point out to us the best maps to download... you know what I mean?

The Map of the Week is the answer. Each time it's released, which is once a week, it reviews a new map we consider the best from that week. Our reviews promise to be both fair and balanced; by pointing out both the good and the bad. We promise a fun new map each week to read about and, ultimately, to download.

All review scores are based from a possible five points:

(5/5)

If you know of a map good enough to be Map of the Week, please leave us a note.

The Map of the Week is posted every Wednesday.

[DND] Hive - March 21, 2007 - by Windebieste

"After an unfortunate accident, your APC has crashed through the walls of a Xenomorph hive. Crawling clear of the flaming wreckage, you lose consciousness. Once wakefulness reasserts itself, it's obvious that you are going to need to find some weapons in order to defend yourself. Hopefully, scouring the wreckage of the APC will equip you with the basics of what you need - but to find real firepower and hold your ground against the inevitable onslaught of jaws and slime, you'll have to explore deeper into the hive..."

Satanic Sanctuary - January 03, 2007 - by Windebieste

"Some people might think that Quake was an amazing work of originality. Well, it wasn't. It contains at least 20 references to the works of HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos - a large literary body of unconnected short stories about an ancient and powerful race of malevolent beings visiting the Earth eons ago; and their inevitable return in our lifetime to claim back the Cosmos as theirs. Satanism is little more than a minor, trivial cult in the eyes of these 'Old Ones'; and Humans are but insignificant pawns in the cosmic struggle for its supremacy. Here is their Sanctuary."

Razorback Point Whaling Station - December 21, 2006 - by Windebieste

"Bouvetoya...Bouvet Isle. Whatever you choose to call it, we all know that according to the Long Count of the Aztec calendar, Aliens and Predators from beyond the stars duke it out once every one hundred years beneath the Antarctic ice. Well, that's what Hollywood would have us believe, anyway. So, here for fans of the AvP movie is the opportunity to kick up some snow while they frag really ugly critters that should have stayed buried beneath the ice."

Dropship Refueling Station - November 22, 2006 - by Windebieste

"Maybe crawling around in the darkness across the open wind blown gantries and navigation beacons of an off-world refueling station has some kind of death wish appeal to you. If so, then you'll find this map to give you just the right amount of vertigo with its wide open layout and threats of sudden drops into the blackest of oblivion. Don't expect any Dropships to come and rescue you if you topple off the edge, though, 'cause the Marines ain't gonna arrive anytime soon to this refueling station."

Winter's Vendetta - November 01, 2006 - by Windebieste

"Screaming winds, driven snow and ugly things running around in the wet trying to rip each other's heads of. Sounds like the kind of place you might normally want to avoid, and indeed, Winter's Vendetta offers a convincing frigid environment for AvP2 players to experience what snow blindness is really like. Grab your snow shoes, protective clothing and goggles. We're going for a malemute pulled sleigh-ride."

AvP Community Gallery - October 20, 2006 - by Windebieste

"Hey, check it out! It's an art gallery packed full of several hundred AvP fan art images. Rather than decapitate some hapless Marine, I would prefer to go online with a date and visit the AvP Community Gallery together. How Romantic would that be, hey? I could ask some cool AvP loving chick on the other side of the planet to go out with me on a virtual date in this map and chat about the exhibits."

Island of the Dead - October 11, 2006 - by Windebieste

"There are two types of map authors: The Technician, whose expertise lies in a thorough knowledge of how to use DEdit; and the Artist, an author who has a clear ability of to create an emotional visual/aural experience. In the case of Island of the Dead, the author, in this case - an Artist, has concentrated on the drama and narrative element. If you need something a little different to satisfy your Alien vs. Predator single-player cravings, then this map will definitely fit the bill."

Lost Cargo - October 04, 2006 - by Windebieste

"Well, surprise, surprise! I have returned from my DEdit sabbatical and now that many of my own AvP2 mapping projects are out of my hair and online, I can return and dedicate my time once again to writing reviews of other people's work. So, for the new start let's take a look at a fine little effort called 'Lost Cargo.' This map is full of sweet surprises, too."

Overwatch - January 06, 2006 - by Redclaw

"This week, we are looking at a classic arena style map called Overwatch. It is a fairly large, open world set on a greenish-tinged planet. Constructed in the style of Ally, Depot, and A Lesser Fate, this map will give you plenty of variety for movement, eye candy, playability, and strategy. I loved the fact you can have only three characters in this map and still have a blast. This map comes complete with a firing APC unit, sentry guns, and versatility."

DM_Bouvetoya - December 30, 2005 - by Redclaw

"Better put on your heavy snow jacket, because you are going to need it for this one. DM_Bouvetoya is based on the 1900’s whaling village from the AvP movie. It is filled will old buildings, water towers, a train trestle, arctic cats, and underground storage areas. This cold windy map will provide you lots of visual entertainment and realism."

Malice Lake - December 15, 2005 - by Redclaw

"Ancient rusting buildings are now once again visible as the lake waters have receded during the summer’s furnace-like heat. As the temperature rises, the Xenomorphs inhabiting the structures and hive become more active. Evening has fallen on the lake…it's well worth exploring with your buddies and lots of ammo just in case…"

DND Quarantine - November 30, 2005 - by Redclaw

"Love remakes of the original AvP2 maps? Then this map is for you! This is a nice remake of the classic AvP2 map DM_Quarantine. While it has many of the same textures and feel of the original map…this is a totally new environment to explore. For those of you that love Face F*cks (Hugger) and Chestburster characters…you will love this map! Read on and find out why!"

Crystal Crash - October 26, 2005 - by Windebieste

"Most maps you will download for AvP2 will support bog standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch at least. Occasionally you'll find some that support Evac; and if you're lucky, you'll find some Single Player maps, too. Rarely - only very rarely - will you find a map that supports a Custom Multiplayer mode that doesn't require a mod to be installed. Crystal Crash is one such map. It supports a unique form of Objective Based Team Deathmatch where Players must do more than just run around in circles and shoot each other."

=ARC= Map Pack - October 12, 2005 - by Windebieste

"Ooh, look! A new map pack, and some of these maps are actually quite good, too. Sure, if you regularly download new maps, then some of the contents of the =ARC= Map Pack are going to be familiar. Nonetheless, there is enough new and previously unreleased material here to pique your interest. Oh, and a lot of the maps you may be already familiar with have been updated making this map pack an essential upgrade to your ever growing AvP2 map collection."

Enterprise - September 28, 2005 - by Windebieste

"Not happy enough with running around the grimy environments of a prefabricated Weyland Yutani installation? Need to express yourself by spraying some acid blood against some nice pristine walls? Then this map is for you! Here is your ticket to Uber GeekDom as you charge down the corridors of one of the most famous fictional spacecraft of all time, the Enterprise. The crew had better set those phasers to 'Kill' because the hostile things that just beamed aboard ship aren't exactly friendly."

Hadley's Hope - July 20, 2005 - by Windebieste

"There have been several attempts at bringing the well known Weyland-Yutani colony to AvP2. While each one differs in approach and layout design, they are each valid in their own right. But this version of the all too familiar "shake and bake" complex is, to date, the most complete and fully detailed. So, pick up your Pulse Rifle, Marine, and let's step into those empty, foreboding corridors one more time..."

SC Map Pack - February 09, 2005 - by Windebieste

"Map packs. I love 'em. Sure, you can never tell if it's going to worth the download. Sometimes you can download a map pack and find everything in rocks, and sometimes the entire contents can suck big time. Usually, there is one map in the pack that you return to again and again. Well, here we have a pack of 5 Stealth Cadre Clan maps, and they're reasonably good too. There's bound to be at least one in here that will suit your tastes. Rod Serling's Giant Infested Scrotum Hangs Heavily Over the Sacrificial Altar of Stonehenge - January 19, 2005 - by Chris Beaver

"The help file that comes along with this level does not mince words - when Windebieste conceived of this idea, he was sick, delirious, and probably medicated. Keep that in mind as you install this, ‘cause on more than one occasion while meandering about this map, you will say to yourself that no one in his right mind could have ever come up with this concept.

Still, in its surrealism lies it true power, ‘cause there are few maps I’d rather be in while firing SADAR rockets at my buddies."

Depot2 - December 29, 2004 - by Windebieste

"The original Depot for AvP2 is a great map; but this user-created revision adds a lot of special little touches and also manages to stay thematically faithful to the original map that inspired it. The richly-detailed environment and ambiance makes it a worthy companion piece to the original Monolith-built map."

Predator Temple - December 08, 2004 - by Windebieste

"Now that the Alien versus Predator movie has been and gone, it's time for the fans to start in earnest in creating their own user-made content for Aliens versus Predator 2. Not surprisingly, map authors are turning their attention to creating environments influenced by the great ancient pyramid buried under the ice that appears in the AvP film. "While the complex ecological and economic issues of deforestation continues to plague the world's great remaining verdent belts, it is in the heart of the jungles that bio-diversity may yet yield valuable discoveries to science. The continual discovery of new species aids in Humanity's pool of knowledge and our understanding of the world.

Rite of Passage - September 08, 2004 - by Windebieste

"Erich Von Daniken, author of Chariots of the Gods, would have us all believe that the great ancient cultures of the world have experienced visitations by superior beings from beyond the stars and that these ancient ruins are often associated with human sacrifices. Today we know better. The current popular theory is Predators used these ancient sites for the purpose of performing 'Rites of Passage' for their junior clan members by using these locations to hunt down and fight bio-mechanical Aliens."
