Biography
I love the night. The cold air brought in by it brings shivers down my spine. Whenever it snows on a dark night like this, I think of home. What is home, now? It’s only a dream I have. I’m always on the run from whatever’s chasing me out there. The sounds of battle are thick in the town nearby. I’d investigate, but what’s left of my sanity implores me not to enter combat. A scar down the center of my right eye from forehead to jaw is all I have left to remember my party by. Who were they, and why would they travel with me? No matter. Ahh, I bet I know why you’re reading this. You want to know who I am. Come, then. Sit next to me, and I shall tell you of my past, my people’s history, my future, and why I’m here. Ahh, the grim days of my childhood. I gre up with a single father, who regretted ever meeting my mother. Yes, he was a great farmer from Faerun. An elf, like myself. He gradually became well-known and made it to the top of the nobility chain, even though that doesn’t happen very often on this world. Haha, you ask yourself, "This world? What does she mean? Is there another world?" To answer, yes there is. In fact, there are many worlds, this only being one in a million. I may be fourteen, but I’m knowledgable for my age. Back to my past, my father was of great nobility. He met my mother at an inn while visiting Baldur’s Gate, and they both became quite drunk. One thing led to another, and I was the result. He went back home, without knowing I was to be born. When I was, my mother left me on his doorstep, telling him to take good care of me. What right did she have leaving me on the doorstep of a man I rather would not have known. Yes, my father could be rude to me. Especially since I’m only half-elf. Racism is a big thing in this world. It comes from all over, but he especially hated me for being of Crusader descent. Now, I know this is where you ask, "A Crusader? Aren’t those Paladins on holy journeys?" Well, that’s one definition. Unfortunatley, I’m a Crusader. Being one is not much to be proud of. I wish I could be, but I’m not. Before I go any further, I must point out that Crusaders are very mysterious. Their species can be strange in many ways. For instance, if you’re born a Crusader, and you’re half of another species, the Crusader part of you would take over the other part of you. I’m half-elf physically, but genetically, I’m completely Crusader. As always, I question what a Crusader is. After all these years of being one, how can I not know what it is? Well, this is what I know: Crusaders are religious humanoids, on a mission for their gods. They can be pure good, ore pure evil. I have no idea what I am, but we must stick to the point. For years, Crusaders have fought over good and evil. Crusaders themselves are not born to a specific side. They journey and decide early in life. If a Crusader is born strong, they will become initiates. But if they are born weak, they become Watchers. Watchers are a separate division. They watch over Crusaders, report them, and gather information for the crusaders they watch. Do I have a watcher? All Crusaders do. Where’s mine? I don’t know. Watchers are assigned to as many as twenty Crusaders, and as little as five. Seeing as how I live nowhere near my brethren, mine must have very few to watch over. Genetics of a Crusader, you ask? Very complicated. They’re born to be soldiers. Depending on their color, they will gain specific powers. I don’t know much about the colors, but if I ever learn of them, I’ll tell you. One thing I do know for sure, Crusaders have liquid skin. Their skin can turn into anything they want it to be in humanoid form. Crusaders typically take the forms of humans. The skin also makes the clothing, or armor they wear. My armor is partially made from my skin. Yes, my skin is black when it becomes armor. I’m white as a dutchess, but my armor is black as night. I’m guessing the color of a Crusader’s armor decides what his/her colored powers are. So far, I know that I’m a very agile warrior. I love the forest, open spaces, the cries of battle, holding a sword, and moving at speeds that no other humanoid can move at. It’s like a fairy. Anyway, the Crusaders have a strange religion too complex for me to understand, so I’ll leave that to historians to figure out. Back to my past. As I said, I grew up in Faerun. What a beautiful city. Lights, people, buildings, and the coast! I loved watching sunsets. Unfortunately, my life wasn’t filled with love. Most of it was filled with hatred. My father hated my race, children made fun of me because my skin turned to liquid at inappropriate times. Father tried to keep me inside all day, but being as curious as I am, I always wandered into town. My only friends were those of the clergymen. I found hospitality and comfort in churches. I was known as the "peace keeper", ’cause if there was a dispute between two or more churches, all I had to do was get in the middle of it. I knew the priests of all the religions. They were the only friends I had. Sometimes I have trouble remembering their names because there were so many of them. They all treated me like a child, even though I was more intelligent than most my age. The only joy I got out of childhood was the time I’d spend being a church’s "messenger", or when I’d get to help a monk with his duties. Some religions rejected female children. I still can’t understand why. I saw plenty ofother children go in there, but maybe they were worried the children would convert into another religion because I was there. As my life moved on, I could remember being put through many physical, wisdom, and intelligence tests. Deep down, I knew someone was secretly watching over me. I almost thought of converting to a religion, but I knew it wouldn’t be a good idea. Soon, father grew old. He grew too old to take care of me and his "favorite" son. His son, by half-brother, was always kind to me. He was much older, but that never separated us. He worked as a fisherman all day, and would come home with tales from sailors for me. I always listened intently to his stories. I loved hearing about sailing away, battling pirates, and joining the ranks of some imperial army. As the years dragged on, I realized I had no place in that city. I had to get out. When I turned thirteen, my father died, leaving all his fortune to my half-brother. I told him how I needed to get away, and he knew by my muscles that I was more capable of handling the outside world. He came back from fishing one day with a two-handed sword, chain mail, a helm, a backpack, and traveller’s boots. He gave them all to me and said, "Joanna, you’re the most beautiful young woman I’ve ever met. You’ve developed faster than any girl, and your courage outranks any man’s. There’s nothing I can do to keep you from going out on your own to find out who you really are. Just remember to be kind to everyone you meet, even if they are evil. Also, I’ll always be here for you. If you just want to come home for a bit, I’ll be here waiting for you." Later that night, I left on my own into the wilderness. Wasn’t too scary out there for the first few days. Having a compass and map helped me find towns, outposts, military checkpoints, and safe areas to rest. I never got into "adventuring" until I met Drey. I met him one day on my way out of a lone tavern. He was standing against a tree, just watching travellers go by at night. Now, obviously I didn’t just waltz up to him and ask him to adventure with me, but seeing as how he looked all alone I didn’t take my time to ask. He’s a very tall, muscular, handsome human. Probably the most intelligent ranger I’ve ever met. As I walked by him, he asked me where I was going. Seeing as how I was going nowhere, I started a friendly chat with him. He informed me of news that a small settlement was looking for a group of adventurers. His party was at the inn nearby, and he needed one more person who had the knowledge of maps and directions. Since that’s what I’d been using for the past two months to get around, I decided it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I did need to sharpen my blade, and get rid of the rust on my unused chain mail. He invited me into his room, where I was greeted by a strong bard playing the lute, a huge dark-skinned male paladin, a female human mage, and finally an extremely beautiful female drow thief. They all greeted me with food (which I hadn’t eaten for several days), joyful card playing, music, stories, and dance. All this time I kept asking myself questions about this drow thief. It wasn’t normal to see someone so different. I had already heard terrible stories of drow attacking villages, leaving no one alive, and disappearing without a trace. I was afraid she’d murder me in the night. Why was I so afraid of her? This party obviously had nothing against her, so why did I? I was different, myself. Without my chain mail on, my skin rippled in waves of gray and black. It was strange. She had obviously heard stories about the Dark-Souled Crusaders destroying whole worlds, but it’s not often someone even knows what a Crusader is. I later found out she and Drey were lovers. It soon came to me that this party had been together a very long time. The next morning, we set out toward the village asking for help. Of course, I pondered to what we could handle compared to the village guards. Why would a village call upon the help of a jolyy group of travellers? After days of travelling, I soon found out. The village guards were all dead. Slaughtered, along with the rest of the village. With my first glimpse of death in the flesh (so to say), I was horrified, but also intrigued. I couldn’t help, but hang my head, fall to my kness and pray to the Sun God that these people’s souls weren’t taken. The next part was too gruesome to mention. Just as a fellow traveller (one party member who I had not been introduced to yet) reached the center of town, an arm reached out of the ground and pulled him to the dirt. I covered my mouth in horrific amazement as this friend of the party was soon disembowled. The rest of the dead villagers rose from their death beds with an eerie glow in their eye. Drey signaled the bard. Our bard played his trumpet high and hard. It sounded like a War trumpet, and with all the confusion, I can still remember that trumpet. All the party members charged into battle, and one fell after another. Drey, the drow elf (Katrina), I, the paladin, and mage were left standing out of twenty-three members. The sounds of battle made my blood flow fast. I got a wild feeling, and I started hacking the undead hordes to pieces, but for every one I killed, two more took it’s place! They were all around us, and we soon became separated. Drey sounded the retreat, and I was soon running for my own life. My arm wounded, my sword broken, my chain mail town in many links, and weary from combat, I slowly ran through the woods. I ran....I’ve never run from anything, especially a fight...*sniff* It was so terrible, I’ve never seen anything like it. They’re dead, because I hadn’t the courage to sacrifice myself for their lives? What am I worth if I can’t save others! I ran!....I ran....I ran....They chased after me for what seemed like hours, but were only minutes. Soon, I reached then end of the road. The brush was too think to move through anymore. They had me cornerd. I cried and kneeled, ready to receive the death blow. As a skeleton raised it’s sword, I heard a crack above me. I looked up with tears in my eyes and saw the two most amazing figures. The first, a paladin with black armor, red eyes, and a large, glowing two-handed sword. He was moving like a cat does when it stalks it’s predator! This was no ordinary paladin. He was in the trees above, moving among the branches like a wild monkey. He cocked his head, gave me a sad look with his glowing red eyes, and saved my life! I thank whoever he was that he saved my life! The undead hordes heard him above, stopped what they did, and looked up. He came crashing down onto a skeleton, crumbling it beneath his feet. He raised leg, and instead of hacking, he used the medium-colored skin man’s hand-to-hand combat! He kicked, punched, and was more agile than any man I’ve seen who use martial arts. The undead fell to the ground in record numbers with each of his blows. He’d jump in the air, throw fireballs, light zombies on fire, deliver cold blows, and casted spells I’d never heard of! He turned back and yelled, "RUN, CHILD! THIS CAN ONLY GET WORSE!" As soon as he said that, a black dragon (the second figure) came swooping down, shooting fire out of his mouth completely across those hordes. Their legions fell back from such a powerful blow, and he pursued. But it was in vain! I soon saw the dragon fall from arrows, and shadow dragons attacking him all the same. I ran...I ran with all my might. The knight I saw fighting all those undead screamed out in pain as he was finished off. With no undead hordes on my tail this time, I slowed down to get a hold of myself, but I couldn’t! I failed myself, and all my party members! Why didn’t I accept the power I had to save my friends? Why didn’t I save the knight who risked his life and his dragon’s for mine? Why did they risk THEIR lives for mine? With all this confusion, I cried, and finally fell asleep. Soon, it began raining, and I couldn’t tell the difference between night and day. I looked at my map under lantern-light, and found my way to a town quite far from where I left off. I had no money, so the innkeeper let me sleep in his stable. Being with the horses that night wasn’t so bad, but I couldn’t sleep either. I was too afraid of the undead. I cried once again, and felt terrible. The next day I set out for Faerun. I’ve had no instances with anything really bad, and these two days later, here I am. Telling my story to you, trying to find peace among the rain, the stars, the clouds, the night, and the cries of battle near the town over there. I can’t wait to get home, talk with my brother, and sleep peacefully. But how will I sleep peacefully with such an incident in my head? No matter. I have no weapon nor armor to help the town nearby, and I’m too tired to move my body. I’m going to try to sleep now, even with the thought that Crusaders are watching over me even now....
