Introduction to the Wonderful World of Sorcery

The Sorceress is extremely adept in the area of magic, and depends mostly, if not totally, on her spells as offence. Physically, she is much weaker than the other character classes, and needs to stay away from weapons combat. Your main focus should be to dish out as much damage as possible with your spells, while avoiding getting hit as much as you can. This guide will teach you the basics on how to develop your Sorceress properly and what to keep in mind. Remember that this is a general guide, and nothing needs to be followed strictly.

Starting Out

A triumphant battle!
The Sorceress has three skill trees available to her: Cold, Lightning, and Fire. You'll want to focus on one of these trees as your primary offence. Pick one of the three, and have a basic idea of how you are going to allocate skill points. Here's a basic summary of each tree (as your primary offence):

Cold - This is a highly recommended skill tree to develop. Not only do spells deal out a considerable amount of damage, but they also freeze/slow your enemies. The various armor types will help boost your defence, and Cold Mastery will reduce the effectiveness of your enemies' resistance to cold later in the game.

Lightning - The Lightning tree is perhaps the worst tree to use as a primary offence. The spells cast too slowly compared to Cold and Fire, and are fairly unreliable.

Fire - Fire is an excellent way of laying waste to your enemies, but lacks the slowing effects of colds spells. You'll have to do a bit more running with Fire spells. Be aware that some monsters will have particularly high resistance to Fire later in the game, and there is not much you can do about it, except to boost your Fire damage with Fire Mastery.

Key Skills

No matter which tree you choose as your primary offence, there are some skills that you will need from each tree:

Frozen/Shiver/Chilling Armor - Frozen Armor provides a good defence boost, while freezing enemies that hit you. You'll want to get Shiver Armor if you are going deeper into the Cold Tree, and possibly Chilling Armor if you choose to. You don't need more than 1 skill point in any of these, unless you feel a particular need. You should have one of these active at all times.

Warmth - Every Sorceress needs mana, and Warmth is needed to provide you with a constant supply of mana. Eventually you'll want to max out Warmth.

Static Field
- No matter how much damage you're doing with your primary spell, it'll still take forever to kill enemies with very high amounts of hit points (bosses, uniques, creatures in Nightmare/Hell difficulties). This is where Static Field comes in. Continually cast Static Field on these big baddies until they have very low health, and then finish them with another spell. Eventually you'll want about level 9 Static Field, when you'll be able to hit every on screen.
