The Barbarian

BarbarianThe Barbarian is a bulky, hand-to-hand combat-based warrior adept at dual-wielding large weapons such as maces, axes, and swords and wearing the heaviest of armors. He conquers foes by sheer force with primarily physical damage, enhanced by weapon enchantments and his melee-oriented skills.

This character class, returning from Diablo II, remains quite similar to its predecessor, retaining several iconic abilities and strategic facets. His skills lie more in the area of damage and defense bonuses, in addition to a killer set of melee-enhancing tricks like Leap Attack and Whirlwind.

With these facts in mind, the most effective characters of this class rely on building up massively damaging attacks while also building a sufficient amount of defense to sustain the worst direct blows from the denizens of the Hells. The Barbarian is styled to remain on the front lines of battle for extended periods, acting as a "tank" while supporting melee and ranged party members supplement his attacks.

The Fury System

Diablo III's Barbarian class takes a departure from the classic styling of the series in that his skills require no Mana for use. In fact, the Mana Orb that would normally appear on the screen is replaced with three Fury Orbs stacked atop each other, an integral part of the new Fury System crafted exclusively for this character class. This is a first for the series, which has relied in the past on one Mana system to balance the use of skills for all playable characters.

Fury OrbsAs the Barbarian attacks and makes successful hits, is hit by enemies, and slays enemies he builds up units of Fury, a sort of quantification of the adrenaline high and hysterics of a warrior in the heat of battle. His skills, in turn, require this Fury power for use. But rather than costing particular amounts of Fury as Mana is for the abilities of other characters, the Barbarian's skills require one, two, or all three entire Fury Orbs.

Originally, this was not the case. The Fury System started out with a Mana-like orb that worked quite like that classic blue stuff. Then, the development team tried out a system where more Fury points resulted in higher weapon damage from standard attacks regardless of the use of skills. These both evolved into what is the current three-orb system.

The current system dubbed "Endless Fury" provides for and rewards the efficient use of Fury. Using a big-impact skill on a heavy group of monsters will recharge Fury so that one can keep the blows coming, wave after wave. Conversely, if one uses Fury too liberally, such as a powerful three-orb skill on just one monster, this move will require the extra step of recharging the lost Fury more gradually.

Lore

This Barbarian is the very same one that helped conquer the Prime Evils in the events of Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and s/he shows signs of his/her many battles and aging the twenty years since defeating Baal and since Tyrael destroyed the Worldstone.

The Barbarian, for instance, is the same barbarian from Diablo II but 20 years older, and so Blizzard went about deciding what happened to him over the course of that time period. "[These characters] are not generic. They're not an empty void in the middle of a story," said Boyarsky. Players will find the barbarian looks worn in Diablo III and bears multiple battle scars, supposed evidence of his hardships during the time gap.
IGN, 2008

The Barbarian originally came from the Barbarian Highlands, a land on the northwest side of Sanctuary surrounding Mount Arreat. This region split into several parts as a result of the catastrophic destruction of the Worldstone, and is now made up of three islands and the Dreadlands near the Arreat Crater.

From the writings of Abd Al-Hazir
In my journey to catalogue the various denizens, civilizations, and fauna of our world, I have traveled far and wide, but never before have I been struck with such dismay as when standing upon the ramparts of the ancient fortress of Bastion's Keep. I came to see firsthand the barbarians, those near-legendary, immense, relentless, dual-wielding furies of combat dwelling upon their sacred Mount Arreat.

Instead, I stand here looking at a mountain that has been torn asunder by some extraordinary force. The sight, I must confess, is incomprehensible. Yet what I see before me cannot be denied.

What truly happened here? Where are those majestic warriors of old?

Though they were once misunderstood as simple, bloodthirsty invaders, the long and noble history of these proud people is now rightly acknowledged. And therein lies the greater tragedy here, for those of us familiar with the nobility of the barbarians remember too what they call their "vigil", the concept that lay at the very heart of their culture. The barbarians consider it their sworn duty to protect Mount Arreat and the mysterious object within. They believe that if they fail to uphold their duty to the great mount, or are not given a proper burial upon its slopes, they will be denied a true warrior's death, and their spirits shall roam the land without honor for all eternity.

If there are any barbarians left alive, they must truly be without hope. Perhaps this is the genesis of the rumors of monstrous things reported to resemble the barbarians in size and ferocity, but that are in reality nothing more than unreasoning, inhuman beasts. Could the destruction of not only their home but also their very beliefs have actually brought this magnificent race so low?
