Other Monsters

Representing what in the past have been referred to as super-unique monsters, these baddies are always generated in the same location in the game. They may provide excellent opportunities for "rushes" or for the layman, repeated returns to particular locations in the game to pump monsters for loot and experience.

Providing an extra challenge and different combat experience, special monsters are often considerably larger, stronger, and difficult to kill than the standard affair monsters one encounters in Diablo III. They always possess a particular quality enhancing their potency, be it a curse affecting an enemy's defense or a resistance or immunity to certain elemental or physical attacks.

The development team chose to use scripted events in greater frequency and detail than previous games in the series this time around. Bosses like the Thousand Pounder are summoned by a group of Dark Cultist class monsters, an event triggered by one's character arriving in the fateful room; we get to watch them swallowed up into the demon's form and blown away. Somewhat similar to the foreboding earthquake event that occurs when, in Diablo II, the Lord of Terror himself is summoned into the Chaos Sanctuary, these events add to the ambiance of the dark world, not to mention its adrenaline triggers.

Below you'll find a listing of each special monster from Act I.

Siegebreaker Assault Beast
Living Siege Engine of Hell
The Siegebreaker is a massive beast equipped with forged armor and weapons, located on the far end of the Leoric Highlands past where one encounters gnarled walkers.

The Skeleton King
Though slain during the events of the original Diablo, The Skeleton King returns in the third game as predominantly featured in the Wizard introduction trailer and gameplay videos. Summoning a horde of the undead to his aid, this slow-moving giant wields a massive mace. You'll find him in his Throne Room under the Tristram Cathedral, once you get past his minon-generating towers.

Thousand Pounder
Gluttony Incarnate
A group of dark cultists sacrifice themselves to together summon the Thousand Pounder demon in the Forgotten Tombs below the Tristram Cathedral. The demon bears two giant maces which adventurers best avoid.

Mistress of Pain
Seen only in concept artwork thus far, the Mistress of Pain is a terrifying new superunique who by comparison makes Andariel look like a Bratz doll with talons. She also happened to win the grand prize in the costume contest at BlizzCon 2009. It's not yet confirmed, but she is expected to be part of Act I.
