| Festering Appendage |
 |
Description: Summonable subcreature that Baal uses. |
| Location: Act V Worldstone Chamber |
| Strategy: Festering appendages are simple, weak subscreatures and one can either simply run past them to escape their attack. They have a low amount of hit points, so you can slay them quickly, but most players simply direct their character to Baal immediately. |
| |
| Preset Boss Monsters (Super Unique) (22) |
| Andariel, The Maiden of Anguish |
 |
Description: Casts Poison Strike, Poison Cloud.
Andariel is one of the four Lesser Evils, and her attacks are heavily based on Poison. She is the one who has been causing all the havok around the Monastery.
Part of Act One's sixth quest, Sisters to the Slaughter.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description of Andariel:
Ancient Horadric texts record that Andariel and the other Lesser Evils once overthrew the three Prime Evils - Diablo, Mephisto and Baal - banishing them from Hell to our world. With this betrayal weighing against her, Andariel's presence in Sanctuary can only mean that the forces of Hell are once again aligned behind Diablo and his Brothers. While it is clear that the Maiden of Anguish is acting on behalf of Diablo to prevent anyone from following him eastward, it is also clear that she must be destroyed if the Lord of Terror is to be stopped. |
| Location: Act I Catacombs, Level 4 |
Strategy: Before attacking Andariel herself, take out all of her minions in the throne chamber. That will leave you with no dangerous (or annoying) distraction.
Normal difficulty is the hardest level in which one must defeat Andariel. At that time characters usually have a low resistance to her powerful poison attacks, which drain life very quickly. Therefore, carry plenty of antidote potions and some extra healing potions too.
Andariel's chamber is large enough so one can run around and escape her for a few moments if necessary. Ranged attackers in particular should keep this in mind; the simple tactic of running away and pelting her with arrows, bolts, or spells works well. |
| |
| Baal Clone |
 |
Description: Summonable creature of Baal's: An intelligent replica of himself. |
| Location: Act V Worldstone Chamber |
Strategy: It may be best to simply ignore Baal Clone if you know which one is the real Baal. A trick to do this is to click and hold down the mouse button for attack after you've selected Baal, and do not let go until he's dead. Since Baal can teleport, one will otherwise lose track of him if he is able to summon Baal Clone.
Otherwise, treat Baal Clone with the same strategy as you do Baal. |
| |
| Baal Clone (II) |
 |
Description: Blizzard's own description:
Über Baal lies in a secret realm where, together with his brothers, he commands three generals. These generals, Lilith, Duriel, and Izual, conduct operations from their own hidden realms. Adventurers powerful and clever enough to unravel the secrets behind this "Pandemonium" will obtain knowledge and treasure used only by the most powerful agents of sin. |
| Location: Pandemonium Event |

| |
| Baal, The Lord of Destruction |
 |
Description: Casts Cold Strike, Cold Wave, Decrepify, Duplicate Self (Baal Clone), Fire Strike, Fire Wave, Inner Sight (Defense reduction), Mana Theft, Summon Festering Appendage, and Teleport.
The last of the Prime Evils is bent on avenging his slain brothers Mephisto and Diablo.
Baal's fully restored form appears quite different from his trapped form shown in the Act Three cinematic and his partially restored forms shown in the Act Four and Terror's End cinematics.
Part of Act Five's sixth quest, Eve of Destruction. |
| Location: Act V Worldstone Chamber |
| Strategy: |
| |
| Coldworm the Burrower |
 |
Description: Sand Maggot Queen. Cold Enchanted and Magic Resistant. The treasure chest next to Coldworm holds the Horadric Shaft, which is key in Act Two's second quest, The Horadric Staff. |
| Location: Act II Maggot Lair Level 3 |
Strategy: Coldworm itself doesn't actually attack, except for the poison it spews everywhere once you have slain it. The real task is killing all of the sand maggots and sand maggot young guarding the room.
If you can get to them first, kill the sand maggots so they cannot lay any more eggs. Once you have done that, get rid of the young and any other monsters in the area before slaying Coldworm. |
| |
| Diablo Clone |
 |
Description: Only on the Realms, Diablo Clone spawns in Act One in Hell Difficulty games after a certain number of Stones of Jordan are sold to merchants. |
| Location: Act I |
| Strategy: Diablo Clone is considerably tougher than the Diablo one fights in The Chaos Sanctuary. Have a group of party members along with you and watch your Life. |
| |
| Diablo Clone (II) |
 |
Description: Blizzard's own description:
Angered by his previous failures to destroy the small groups of adventurers that stood in his way, Diablo has reincarnated himself once again at his absolute maximum strength. The demonic ritual which caused this ultimate reincarnation was long thought to be impossible, even by the most learned arcane scholars. Now, the Lord of Terror sets his plan in motion, and he and his brothers will unleash a new wave of Pandemonium upon the world of Sanctuary...
Pandemonium Diablo lies in a secret realm where, together with his brothers, he commands three generals. These generals, Lilith, Duriel, and Izual, conduct operations from their own hidden realms. Adventurers powerful and clever enough to unravel the secrets behind this "Pandemonium" will obtain knowledge and treasure used only by the most powerful agents of sin. |

| Diablo, The Lord of Terror |
 |
Description: Casts several special spells: Cold Swipe, Fire Nova, Fire Wave, Charge, Red Lightning Wave, Bone Enclave, and Taunt.
The youngest of the three Prime Evils.
Part of Act Four's third quest, Terror's End.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description:
Diablo spent two centuries slowly working to corrupt the Soulstone that imprisoned him. In time, he was able to extend his influence into the surrounding area and corrupt both King Leoric and his archbishop, Lazarus. The King proved too strong to fully control, so the Demon took possession of his son, Prince Albrecht. Diablo then began to shape an outpost of Hell within the catacombs that ran beneath the town of Tristram. By spreading terror into the surrounding countryside, the Demon was able to attract many heroes who came to cleanse the land of evil. By the time the strongest of these heroes reached this goal, though, he had become fully influenced by the will of Diablo. In his twisted state, this adventurer believed that the only way to fully control the Demon was to plunge the shard of the Soulstone into his own head. This, of course, was exactly what Diablo had planned as the Demon now had an even stronger body to use to find his brothers and complete his ultimate plan... |
| Location: Act IV The Chaos Sanctuary |
Strategy: It is easiest to defeat Diablo with a party of characters. Keep him distracted with anything you can throw at him, including tank build characters, minions, and summonables.
Diablo is highly resistant to elemental attacks so being able to inflict a substantial amount of physical damage is quite helpful.
To save oneself from death at the hands of this lord, build a high resistance to Lightning and Fire. Diablo's Red Lightning attack, which is actually half physical damage, will otherwise be quite devastating. |
| |
| Duriel, The Lord of Pain |
 |
Description: Demonic Chill aura. Casts Charge, Jab, and Smite. Equally resistant to all elemental types.
One of the four Lesser Evils, Duriel is a gigantic insect-like creature.
Part of Act Two's sixth quest, The Seven Tombs.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description:
As the Sin War plodded along through the centuries, many in Hell began to wonder just what it was they were fighting over. The Lesser Evils of Hell were growing tired of the endless ebb and flow in the tides of mortal favor, as well as those in the elaborate schemes of the three Prime Evils - Diablo, Baal and Mephisto. The Lesser Evils longed to return to the epic days of the Great Conflict, and lay siege again to the gates of the High Heavens.
Two of the Lesser Evils, Azmodan and Belial, saw the situation as their chance to overthrow the Prime Evils and take control of Hell for themselves. The two Demon lords made a pact with Andariel and Duriel - as well as their minor brethren - assuring them that humanity would not deter the ultimate victory of Hell. Azmodan and Belial devised a plan to end the stalemate and achieve victory in the Sin War, ultimately riding the bloody crest of the Great Conflict straight into Armageddon. Thus, a great revolution was set into motion as all of Hell went to war against the Three Brothers, seeking to send them into a Dark Exile.
Over the next two centuries, the three imprisoned brothers focused their Demonic powers upon corrupting the Soulstones that bound them to the mortal plane and began bending the will of any nearby humans. Mephisto was the first imprisoned and, consequently, was the first to break free from his bondage. His wrath against those who had put him such a compromised position was swift and merciless.
As punishment for his part in the Dark Exile that sent the Prime Evils to the mortal realm, Duriel has been left behind by Baal to guard the Tomb of Tal Rasha. Embittered by this new position of solitary servitude, the Lord of Pain has claimed the souls and blood of many bold adventurers. |
| Location: Act II Duriel's Lair |
Strategy: Since Duriel's Lair is a tight space, spell casters and bow users will find the Lord of Pain one of the more difficult monsters to defeat. To those, we recommend guarding one's character with as many minions as you can come up with to delay (or prevent) him from reaching one's character.
Although Duriel is resistant to all elemental attacks, he has no immunities, and because of his large size and the small size of his lair, skills like Fire Wall work well.
Duriel in particular is best defeated by parties rather than individual characters due to the limited space with which to escape. |
| |
| Griswold |
 |
Description: Soon after the warrior who came to be known as The Wanderer "defeated" Diablo far under the Monastery at Tristram and headed east in his search for salvation, the town was overrun with demons once again, but this time there was no hero to defend it.
Griswold was one of the many remaining townsfolk who fell, but by the cruel evil of the Three, he was corrupted and rose from the dead after being slain. Now, he wanders Tristram and guards it as an outpost of the Three and to remind the land of Khanduras of Diablo's fury at their insolence. |
| Location: Act I Tristram |
Strategy: Poor old Zombie Griswold is a slow, shambling creature but since he is Cursed, melee fighters will have a harder time slaying him. Just carry enough healing potions to hold you over.
Draw away and slay the other monsters within Tristram before you attack him.
If you have just started out in Normal Difficulty and find that Griswold is too difficult to defeat, return and defeat him after you have leveled up a few more times or just skip over him. |
| |
| Hephasto the Armorer |
 |
Description: Conviction aura. Spectral Hit. Magic Resistant.
An Overlord demon (not Overseer), of which class there are only 2 in Diablo II.
Part of Act Four's second quest, Hell's Forge.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description:
When the Serephim who followed the Angel Inarius into battle were made to pay for the destruction of an infernal temple by an outraged Mephisto, many were forced into unholy servitude to the Lord of Hatred. Inarius himself was bound with tremendous chains as the wings were slowly torn from his back. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out his once glowing skin and his features were distorted by the vile powers of The Three. Hephasto, one of the weapon smiths of Inarius that was corrupted by Mephisto, rose through the ranks of Hell to become a master armorer for the forces of darkness. While his place at the fires of the Hellforge is coveted amongst jealous Overlords, none dare cross swords with him lest he take the anguish of his lost glory out upon their bloated bodies. |
| Location: Act IV River of Flame Hellforge |
| Strategy: |
| |
| Izual |
 |
Description: The corrupted form of the Angel Izual.
Part of Act Four's first quest, The Fallen Angel.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description of Izual:
From the Crystal Arch at the very heart of the High Heavens to the arcane Hellforge of the Underworld, the warriors of the eternal realms pursue victory in their timeless conflict. The legendary deeds of the heroes of the realms beyond elicit both veneration and insight.
The greatest of these heroes was Izual, lieutenant to the Archangel Tyrael and bearer of the Angelic Runeblade Azurewrath. He once led a fierce attack upon the Hellforge as the creation of the dark demonblade Shadowfang was nearing completion. During the battle that ensued, Izual was overcome by legions of Chaos and was lost to the Darkness.
Izual now remains as a dark, tortured soul who is trapped within the forsaken realms of Hell. Despite his valor and strength, his form was twisted by the perverse powers of the Prime Evils. They forced him to betray his own kind and give up Heaven’s most guarded secrets. Izual became a corrupt shadow of his former self; a fallen angel trusted neither by Heaven nor Hell.
For his transgressions, the spirit of Izual was bound within the form of a terrible creature that was summoned from the Abyss. His maddened spirit has resided within that tortured husk for many ages now. Although he now certainly no longer carries the weapon Azurewrath, Izual still possesses great strength and powers within his new form. He is a threat to any who would oppose him, and in his current state, it is certain that he will see you as opposition. |

| Korlic |
 |
Description: Casts Leap Attack.
One of the three guardians of Mount Arreat's summit.
Part of Act Five's fifth quest, Rite of Passage.
Blizzard has published this information on Korlic on its official Diablo II strategy guide web site:
Korlic was raised in the Henknoc jungles on the southern end of the barbarian kingdom. While the land that these barbarians lived in was lush and full of life, it was also full of danger beyond belief. Korlic was the leader of the Henknoc, protecting his people from the beasts they lived among. As a child he had managed to tame one of the more vicious animals called a Stalker. It was said that there must have been druid in his blood in order to perform such a task at such a young age. In his teens Korlic rescued a small child from a horde of giant spiders. The child turned out to be the son of a chieftain of an enemy tribe. Without thought or worry Korlic returned the boy home. While some say it was an act of stupidity, others say it was an act of courage. Which ever, it brought about an end to the conflicts between the two tribes.
When the Ancients summoned Korlic it was through the tribes Seer, his wife. She told him the Ancients had called upon him to protect that which must not fall, to protect Mt. Arreat. The honor was such that Korlic could not speak. Seeing this, his wife turned to the people of Henknoc and shouted, "My husband, your chief, has been chosen by the Ancients to guard sacred Mt. Arreat. In honor of this joyous occasion we shall celebrate until his departure." And they celebrated, for three days until Korlic left. On the final day, Korlic named his successor. He was the young boy, now a man, who Korlic had saved from the giant spiders so long ago. Korlic knew he would rule fairly and justly over both tribes. Finally, with all his worldly deeds complete, he ventured to the top of Arreat to begin his otherworldly quest of protecting the Worldstone for all eternity. |

| Lilith |
 |
Description: Blizzard's own description:
Lilith is believed to be Queen of the Succubi and matriarch of demons. After her legions of Succubi and strongest daughter Andariel were killed by mortals who successfully defended the Worldstone, Lilith swore to personally intervene. She masterminded the revival of Diablo by manifesting herself in the mortal realm and performing a ritual of Dark Summoning. This ritual, long thought to be impossible by the most powerful mortal wizards, allowed Lilith to link with Diablo across realms, strengthening him until he was finally able to once again reincarnate himself in the mortal plane. Rage and a deep yearning for revenge boiled within the eyes of the Lord of Terror, and together he and Lilith resurrected the two remaining Prime Evils as well as Duriel and Izual, two of their strongest agents.
Diablo announced his grand plan - the Three were finally strong enough to spread Pandemonium throughout Sanctuary. Lilith could have easily conducted an assault on her own, but because she had been left severely weakened by the Dark Summoning ritual, she agreed to aid the Prime Evils and command some of their remaining forces. |

| Madawc |
 |
Description: Casts Shout, Double Throw.
One of the three guardians of Mount Arreat's summit.
Part of Act Five's fifth quest, Rite of Passage.
Blizzard has published this information on Madawc on its official Diablo II strategy guide web site:
No one is quite sure where Madawc is from, only that one day he walked out of the hills of Val Narian in the North, an axe in both hands, ready to battle. Those who were crazy enough to battle beside Madawc referred to him as the warrior prophet. He claimed he was cursed with visions from both past and present. He would often begin fights without provocation, claiming he sought justice for crimes not yet committed. Before every battle he would sit, trance like, staring up to the skies. Sometimes, when he would fall out of these trances, he would rise from wherever he was, and leave, not taking part in the waiting battle.
Those that knew of Madawc’s trances began to believe he could tell the outcome of a battle even before it was fought. How else could the crazy old codger have survived for as long as he had? He became well known among the warriors of the Northern Lands because of his supposed gift. Men began to follow Madawc wherever he went, staying if he stayed, leaving when he left. He became something of a legend, a warrior prophet. However, one night as Madawc sat around the fire with some of his men, he stood up, dropped his pipe, and left. When one of the men stopped him and asked where he was going he said, "The Ancients have called me to guard Mt. Arreat. So, I must go." Pushing past the man, Madawc began his long trek south to the summit of Mt. Arreat. |

| Mephisto, The Lord of Hatred |
 |
Description: Casts Blizzard, Charged Bolt, Ethereal Blast, Frost Nova, Lightning, and Poison Nova.
The oldest of the three Prime Evils and the first to have been captured by the Horadrim and imprisoned inside a soulstone.
Part of Act Three's sixth quest,
The Guardian.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description of The Lord of Hatred:
Mephisto was the first Prime Evil to be captured and his stone was buried in a vault beneath the Aranoch desert. A third of the Horadrim stayed to guard this tomb until the remaining two Brothers were captured. Though the cost was high, all of The Three were eventually captured.
Mephisto finally managed to overcome the powers of the Soulstone that imprisoned him enough to influence and corrupt the local priesthood, known as the Zakarum. The Demon then had the priests work spells to shatter the Soulstone into seven shards, breaking the mystic seal and freeing the Lord of Hatred. Mephisto drove the six smaller shards into the left palms of six Zakarum archbishops who were then charged with bringing him nourishment in the form of human sacrifices while running their temple. The largest stone pierced the hand of the Que-Hegan, the highest divine authority of the Zakarum faith. It was this body that the Demon used as his manifestation on the mortal plane, warping the mortal’s form into an approximation of his true visage. For years the corrupted religious leaders of the Zakarum have kept Mephisto supplied with information and misguided followers to carry out his plans of conquest. |

| Nihlathak |
 |
Description: Necromancer. Casts Corpse Explosion, Summon Minion, Enrage Minion, Arctic Blast, and Teleport.
Part of Act Five's fourth quest, The Betrayal of Harrogath.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description:
As the last surviving clan elder, he has been driven close to madness by his grief over the imminent failure of his clan to protect the Worldstone. Constantly ruminating on the myriad alternate courses the elders could have taken, he lives with the guilt of not dying with his peers. |

| Talic |
 |
Description: Fire Enchanted. Casts Whirlwind.
One of the three guardians of Mount Arreat's summit.
Part of Act Five's fifth quest, Rite of Passage.
Blizzard has published this information on Talic on its official Diablo II strategy guide web site:
Talic is from the Western Shores of the Barbarian Kingdom. At a young age, Talic had already mastered several of the barbarian skills. He was only 19 when he was called to serve the Ancients. Before his calling, he had only heard legends of Mt. Arreat. The Kae Huron mountain range, where lies Arreat, isn't even visible from warm waters he grew up around.
One morning there was a knock at his door. It was the town elder and an old woman. They entered as his wife and young child sat at the table. The woman was introduced as Kala the Seer for Sescheron the capital city of the Barbarian Tribes. She came to bestow upon Talic the ultimate task of protecting the sacred gates to Mt. Arreat. His reward for accepting such service would be eternity atop the mountain. While it was an honor beyond comprehension to be chosen for such a role, he would never be able to return home, nor see any of his family again.
Talic rose from his chair, standing a head taller than the Seer, and told her fiercely "I won't go." He had refused. He told the Seer to choose another. Kala looked at him and said the choice was not hers to make. The Ancients had spoken to her of a young warrior in the West named Talic. That was who they wanted, that was who they chose. Talic stared long at the Seer. Then finally, he nodded slowly in agreement, turned to his wife and child, kissed them goodbye, and journeyed to Mt. Arreat.

| The Smith |
 |
Description: An Overlord demon (not Overseer), of which there are only 2 in Diablo II.
Part of Act One's fifth quest, Tools of the Trade.
Blizzard Entertainment's official description:
The Rogue Monastery served as temple, military headquarters and home for the Sisters of the Sightless Eye for generations. It was here that the Rogues gathered in times of peace to train and in times of war to utilize that training. During the Sin War, the ancient Horadric Mages forged and enchanted a Weapon that also held the power to create powerful artifacts. When their union dissolved, this Horadric Malus was entrusted to the Sisterhood guarding the pass into the East.
When Andariel’s deceit overthrew the structure of the Sisterhood, a great struggle between the followers of Blood Raven and those of Kashya, erupted. The Rogues were forced to give up their ancestral home and the Monastery is now filled with voracious hellspawn. While all of these dark beasts are dangerous, the Overlord who guards the Malus is particularly brutal. Known as The Smith, this vile craftsman now uses the power of the Malus to create weaponry for the minions of Diablo. |

| The Summoner |
 |
Description: Casts Fire Ball, Fire Wall, Frost Nova, Glacial Spike, and Weaken. Equally resistant to Fire, Lightning, and Cold. Extra Strong, Extra Fast.
The Sorcerer from Diablo I in disguise.
Two heroes and one heroine, including a Warrior, a Sorcerer, and a Rogue, attempted to free the town of Tristram from Diablo's terror. Tragically, the Rogue and Sorcerer fell to Diablo's will and now serve him in disguise.
The Sorcerer became The Summoner, who even in his corruption still attempted to escape Diablo's will and built himself an Arcane Sanctuary fused with both his Visjerei magic and the dark magic he had been bestowed with by the Three, in which to hide. Using his powerful magics he summoned servant demons of Hell to protect him from any intruder.
Part of Act Two's fifth quest, The Summoner. |
| Location: Act II Arcane Sanctuary |
Strategy: While The Summoner is weak in physical defense, his spells are quite powerful. Maximize your resistance to Fire and Cold to best guard against his attacks.
Defeat the minions surrounding him as quickly as you can before his spells do a considerable amount of damage to you. It is very difficult to avoid his spells due to the very limited boundaries of the Arcane Sanctuary.
Even spellcasters and other ranged attackers can most easily defeat The Summoner with melee attacks, or at least being within melee range. |
