PlanetDiablo | Features | Ask Gheed | Need For Gheed

Ahoy there slayers of beasts and all things evil! Gheed is on parade once again with your questions and feedback about the world of Diablo.

I actually had an interesting week, I had this fine young fellow come to me with a problem with his armor. It seems unfortunately so that this friend of mine had armor that was too old, and basically falling apart! He came to the right man for new equipment for sure. He ended up getting some beautiful armor I recieved in from the West, at a discount price. Then he elected to take a look at my gambling stash, which is always full of good things, and he ended up with a rare item! I felt so good for him, although secrectly I wished that he would have gotten the +1 to light radius ring. Oh well.

Let's get started with a few letters!

Dear Gheed,

Hey friend!

Looks like you got some pretty nice armor here. I like this studded leather. How much is it? GOOD LORD DATS A LOTTA MONEY! What's that? It's got a high defense of 32? Well what does that mean? How does that effect how much damage I take?

Your Neighborhood Necromancer
Well, a defense rating on armor affects the amount of damage you take when you get hit. For instance, someone with a defense rating of zero will take full hits from a monster as opposed to someone with a defense rating of 500 who will take much less of a beating when they get hit by something. I don't have an exact figure on what the ratio of damage to defense rating is, although I can tell you that it's very important to have lots of it.

On to the next question about Hardcore play!
Hey Gheed -

I know you've seen a few adventures in your time, you might even remember me (although you were hiding, uh, fixing the bottom of your wagon, when we met) and I was wondering who you thought the best class would be for Hardcore play.

Thanks!

Jed D'Lagged : Inbred Redneck Samurai Necromancer Extrodinare!
(Second class)

P.S. Enjoy the enclosed right eyeball of Duriel. I know you'll find a use for it somewhere.

P.P.S Quit with the Glimmering Rings already!
Hey Jed, thanks for writing in. About the best class for Hardcore characters? Um, I'd choose one that doesn't die. For those of you that don't know, Hardcore mode gives the character one life and one life only. Which means, if you die out there on the battlefield, you cannot play that character anymore. They remain just a "ghost in the shell" if you will, to be forever observed by yourself as the "character I goofed on". Anyway, it's probably just a personal preference to which character you can play in Hardcore mode. All of the characters, when played properly, should be able to do decently in Hardcore. I'd start with something simple like the Barbarian and then move on to maybe the Amazon. Try them all out. If you seem to be getting whooped on out there in the sticks, you're probably looking at the wrong class for you.

Next up we have a question about set items and buying.
Hi Gheed -

Is it possible to get a set item, if you have sold it before ???

Soren Jorgensen
Heya Soren, I'm not sure what you're getting at here. If you're talking about getting a set item after you've already recieved and looted one, then yes you can get another. Set items are dropped randomly off monsters out there, and I have been sold many an Arctic Fur. On the other hand, if you're refering to selling a merchant a set item and getting it back after that, this may not be possible. After you quit your adventures for the night the merchants seem to "loose" items that have been sold to them. You may even notice that a sold item is made availible for purchase immediately after you've sold it, although it may dissapear later that adventure. I hope I answered your question.

Now we have something about the fabled "Cow Level"...
Yo Gheed,

Whats up with Wirt's Leg?

Lady Auril, the Frostmaiden
Well Lady Auril, Writ's Leg is part of a recipie that creates a portal to the "Secret Cow Level". We here at PlanetDiablo aren't sure if this cow level was supposed to be a joke or a real place to go, but it actually exists. You can visit this link to get all the details on what to use Writ's Leg for, and how to get to the Secret Cow Level.

Next we have a question about Battle.net chats, read on!
Gheed -

In Open Battle net when i get in their there are picture of people at the bottom like their are some in hoods and some r just a normal character. But the other day i went in their and my character was all silver and very big when i put my cursor over it it said moderator what is that supposed to mean please help me. And Gheed why do u charge so much for weapons

Joe
Heya Joe, thanks for writing in! Always willing to answer a quesiton. The Battle.net chat has a few different icons for their users. For instance, the Diablo players have their classes as their icons, i.e. Amazon and Barbarian. The hooded icons are Hardcore characters that have perished in the field of battle, and no longer have the option to show their true colors online. But, when you're talking about the big silver characters that say Moderator, this is probably just a bug. You see, Battle.net is a chat server mixed in with the game servers. So there are Moderators online to help you. If you happen to be the first person in the chat room on Battle.net, there is a chance you will become a Moderator of the room, although it's probably just a lag bug between the server and yourself. I wouldn't think anything of it. As to charging so much for my weapons? Well, these are fine pieces of weaponry from the outer lands requiring a large price for shipping and handling. Although I have a few +1 cold damage daggers for sale if this suits your needs better...

Sigh, it seems like Charsi gets more mail than I do...
Gheed,

Is it wrong to come back to Act I over and over again just to stare at Charsi? And why do you always sell me crap. I mean, come on, +1 to light radius? What's up with that?

Chuckman the Necromancer
Well Chuckman, I do have to admit that Charsi is quite a looker, and I don't blame you for coming back to visit. Although I hear that she's taking a liking to Deckard Cain. Move in before your chance goes away! Oh, the +1 light radius items? Doesn't everyone need to see? I bet if I didn't sell those, people would be complaining that I didn't sell enough of them...

Up next we have a person who feels strongly about expressing his opinion.
I recently have been getting better connections to open battlenet, but I still get kicked every now and then thanks to the almighty lag monster. Wish I could static cling his keister and then let my hydra's finish the task, but anyways I did want to share a tip on preventing yourself from getting totally looted by PK's and such at least in open and TCPIP games.

The biggest thing I could recommend is copying the SAVE folder in the Diablo 2 directory to a backup location. That way if one does get PK'd or is afraid of loosing that "Oh So Special Warm and Fuzzy Feeling" item, you can restore the backup and continue on as if it didn't happen. Allot of people I've encountered in battlenet don't seem to realize this.

The second thing I want to sound off about is stash size verses what I can carry on hand. Why can I carry more then twice the amount that I can put in a chest? Is my character super man or something? That seems like funny logic to me. I just can't see a Sorceress walking around with Full Plate, Shark Tooth armor, and Tingulated Plate, and 50 bazillion potions and such. Although it's nice to have I would think the stash should be bigger then the players carrying ability. Just my two cents and I don't want to loose what I can carry either, although realistically it should be changed. Expansion pack. :) (Small Note: Extra stash can be obtained through second computer, home network, and another copy of Diablo 2.)

Finally for what I can think of right now, ever notice how a small swarm of insect carry such huge weapons or armors? Ever notice a basket no bigger then a loaf of bread spews out a full sized gothic shield or something that defies normal thinking? Another thing is if the small monster is carrying such bulky items, how do they attack? Is this a Monty Python's thing like the swallow carrying coconuts?

Oh well... that's all I can think of to contribute at this time. Whooped the big D in Hell difficulty at Level 58 sorceress, and had my butt whooped enough on the way there. L8r.

Sean aka -=-{CFBMoo1}-=-
Well Sean, I'd have to say your letter is one of the longest that I've recieved. I have to say that the stash size is a little bit small, but supposedly they've done this for a good reason. The main reason is they don't want characters hoarding equipment to all ends of the earth in their stash box without possibility of loosing it. As to why your character can carry so much? Well the game wouldn't be so fun if you could only carry what's "humanly possible". So let's say for a minute that Diablo II was 100% accurate in the laws of physics. A person would only be able to carry their armor and a weapon or two for their defense. It wouldn't be possible for someone to carry a pack of equipment on top of that. As to the potions, I would have to say it's physically impossible for someone to be able to instantaneously drink a potion including the time it takes to remove the cap and swallow it. I believe they call this "suspension of disbelief".

And finally we'll end it on a monkey note this week...
Gheed -

I like monkeys. Why are there no monkeys in Diablo II? And just where the hell are the Frostburns you promised me? Huh? Where are they Gheed? WHERE?!?

-DeAmico, Necromancer
Commander of the 22nd Undead Flying Monkey Squadron
Well DeAmico, it seems that monkeys are not indiginous to this area of the world. Either that or the massive patrols of monkey slayers have fed your Undead Flying Monkey Squadron ranks and cut the live monkeys to the point of extinction. As to the Frostburns? Well, you'll just have to gamble again won't you?

That's a wrap Ladies and Gents! Feel free to write me any time about what you want to know at gheed at planet diablo dot gamespy dot com. Maybe you'll get your name on the famed PlanetDiablo site!
