PlanetDiablo | Features | Ask Gheed | Ask Greed, I mean, Gheed...

Hey all! Gheed is back again after a brief emergency that he had to take care of. Seems that someone tried to get tricky with some of my shipments on the way to my shop, and I had to go take care of 'em. Turns out, it was all just a misunderstanding and the culprit was someone trying to BUY something. Go figure. I've never had anyone try to get on my merchandise like that.

Well, except maybe some of my gambling items...

Anyway, on with some letters!

Hello G(r/h)eed

1. How come I must drop my six small, precious rings from my backpack before I can fit in my extra full plate? I could easily stack and carry them in my pockets but I just can't.

2. One night long ago I slew a spike fiend and it dropped some gold (I heard the "jingling" sound of cash flowing to the ground). I saw a pile of gold lying next to it and as I approached to collect it, I found out that there was only 1 gold. Why did it "jingle"?. Why did I see a pile of gold?

3. Nowadays I am capable of carrying a lots of cash with me, easily over 450,000 gold. Let's assume one gold(coin) weighs about 15 grams, that's 0.015 kilograms. Thus 450,000 coins weigh 6750 kilograms, that is about 15,000 pounds. However, I feel comfortable running around with more than a full grown elephant equivalent mass buried within my beltpouches and backpack.

Please don't say "It's Magic!". I have major on elemental physics in Sorcerers' Tower so I know what kind of oddities I am talking about...

-Staff Sarge the Sorceress-

P.S. Why you show me your ancient armour among items I can gamble? It costs 800,000 so I can't afford to gamble it until clvl 60 or so... Stop teasing me or let me pay in two shares!
Well Staff Sarge, I'd have to say you have some seriously interesting questions about the natures of physics. But, I can answer all of these questions for you.

First off, I don't know of many sets of plate armor that have pockets, it's expensive to do this process.

Second, if a single coin drops to the ground, does it not make a sound? As to the pile of gold, I'd have to say you were probably fooled by some dew on the grass creating a mirage of some sort.

Lastly, you're a hero. You can carry any amount of weight that you please!

And as to the armor in my gambling stash? Well, there's other people that shop in my store besides you. I can't always be offering leather armor for my more "fortunate" customers.
Ok, picture this, you are creating carnage left and right and you finally get the headpiece to the Hordraic Staff. After all your hard work, you transmute it and put it in your stash for safe keeping. All is well. You then continue searching for treasure and experience only to bite the dust because your portal couldn't be reached. It costs you lots of gold and you are sad, but more determined to go get your stuff. Since you don't have a weapon you reach for the Hordraic staff. You go fourth into the wilderness only to die yet again. You run as fast as you can back into the wilderness, grab your body, portal to town to get some potions and just as you start to leave to go get the staff, your Battle.net connection dies. You cannot get into the game. So, technically you have completed the quest for the staff, yet it isn't in your possession. You can continue to Tal Rasha's tomb, but your poleax just won't fit into that orifice. What do you do? You could try to regain the staff by collecting the pieces and transmuting it again, but wait, you have already got the staff according to the game. So Gheed? What do you do? You can't join a game with someone who already has the staff because it will tell you that "this quest cannot be completed in this game". Is there hope, or is my cool LVL 24 Paladin doomed to thump Spearcats all day long in the desert?

Michael
Hrm...Michael this seems to be an extremely difficult problem you have here. The only advice I have for you is try to find someone who was exactly at the same point as you were in the game at the time you lost the staff. For instance, you need to grab someone on Battle.net that has not yet used the staff but has just obtained it. If you email Blizzard, there may be a chance they could do something, although in cases of lost items etc, they are usually unable to help. Sorry.
Is it all possible to get the closed battlenet characters so you can play them on open, I know that the characters are saved on battle.net but there must be some way to save them to a .d2s file. any feedback on this would be great.

Pheonix
Well Pheonix, in the original version of the game, the developers were planning on implementing a feature where you could "clone" your characters and play them on an open game. Although they removed this feature right before release of the game due to some issues they felt were "unsecure" for possible cheating.
Can i go safely into the cow lvl in normal dificulty with a barbarian lvl31?

Marcelous
Well Marcelous, I would have to say that you would be fairly safe to go into the Secret Cow Level at clvl31. Although I would strongly recommend you bring along lots of town portal scrolls and TONS of healing potions. The cows tend to gang up on you and they fight with more fury than most "mini-bosses" in the game at normal difficulty. Be prepared to get beat on, if not die at least once, unless you're very clever with portals and potions.
Hello, i just stumbled onto your address saying you could answer questions. I really do hope you can help me with this one. My new computer is a custom made computer. It runs on 128 mg ram with a pent II processor. Everything works great. I havent experienced problems with diablo 2 on single player, but my problem is when i get on bnet. After i get on bnet, the whole computer is liable to stop and just have one of note studder like a broken record and i cant turn off diablo, which then forces me to shut it down and turn it back on. i really dont enjoy this and i want to know whats the problem. Once again, the screen just stops and the current sound also stops. btw, im using a yamaha brand sound card and ATI video card (the video is great though.) Thank you so much for looking at my email, i really do hope you can come with a solution to my problem. I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks again!

Andy Ko
Well Mr. Ko, I'd have to say that your problems may not be rooted only in your computer hardware. If you say that the game runs well without Battle.net, then chances are being in an online game would not change the running of your hardware. There isn't anything different from the software that runs when you're on Battle.net other than the networking code. I'd have to put my best bet on the fact you're just "lagged" and that would cause you to jump around on the screen and possibly lock the game.

Unfortunately when you're on Battle.net, you can actually completely stop gameplay and it may seem like nothing is going on. Although this isn't exactly true because the game and your computer are trying to catch up to the server. These things could be part of your internet connection. I'd try playing around with a couple of the Battle.net Realm servers and see if you have the same results.
My Vodoo 3 doesnt seem to work! When i start diablo2 i cant even see the first menue my pc just returnes to Windows, no matter if i play with 3DFX or in Software mode! What shall i do is there a kind of newer driver or somethin?

Ferdinand
If you're having problems with the video on your game, it may be due to the driver software for your card. The game should be compatible with the Voodoo3 card, and for the newest drivers, you can visit 3dfx.com. There will be a support section you can download the newest driver software from. If you have problems with the video after you've installed your software for your video card, you can check out the Blizzard FAQ on Diablo 2 here.
Hey how's it goin Gheed?
Nice column you got goin there...

I was just wondering, how does the attack damage range really work? Like let's say in your "Character" screen you give 1-45 damage...(usually polearms have low minimum damage) does it pick out a random number between that range of numbers when you hit something? Or does it tend to stay nearer to the max damage? Cus then damn I don't wanna use polearms and other low-min's weapons.

Thanx...

Jason
Hey Jason, thanks for the input. The attack damage on a weapon works exactly the way you said. The computer will randomly pick a number between the maximum and minimum damage that your weapon will do on every swing. It's very similar to the paper and pen role playing games out there that rely on dice to pick damage that a weapon/spell does. If you're worried about minimum damage, there are plenty of items that actaully increase your minimum damage, including many weapons.
greetings gheed !

we have a serious problem with our diablo2 lan-sessions. we have IMMENSE hang-ups of the game sometime !!! when having a fight at this time it means you DIE, and cannot do any fu**in' thing :-( it wasn't that bad when we started (we played as a party from the beginning on), only short occured ... but now we play in hell (which definitly ROCKS) and have to face a LOT more of those creepin' creatures - and the more enemies we get, the more it gets laggy over and over. btw there are NO hang-ups in the singleplayer mode of diablo2, but sp stinks ... :-) so this can't be an hardware or resource problem 'cause it only happens when we play together (3-5 persons) in our LAN !! if you do know what this might be --> PLZ help us out !!! we did write several mails to blizzard but they told us to download the newest patch or make a FULL INSTALLATION of the game - HAHA ! we even copied the d2music.mpq and d2char.mpq data from the playdisc to the harddisk (also a tip from blizzard) - but the pc's still access the cd-rom during the game, which causes a lot of those lags i think ...

system specs :

abitBE6-II
196 MB ram
466celeron
geforce 256 DDR
FULL installation of the game
(my friends have similar configurations)
100 MBit HUB
100 MBit Ethernet cards

THX a lot to the whole PlanetDiablo staff (and excuse my bad english, i'm from germany) :-D

bjoern alias Trinity (lvl 63 sorceress)
Well Bjoern, your English is actually very good I'd have to say. About the LAN games, for some reason the networking code for the game isn't very well developed. I have heard of many MANY similar problems and complaints from people. There really isn't much you can do I believe other than have full installations of the software, or possibly have a machine that acts as a dedicated server (A machine that no one plays on, but hosts the game). If you haven't had problems before Hell difficulty, I'd have to say it might be something to do with the server machine and it's resources. Remember, you're holding the load of 5 different users on one machine and trying to send information all at one time. Again, using a machine as a dedicated server may fix this problem.

That's a wrap Ladies and Gents! Feel free to write me any time about what you want to know at gheed at planet diablo dot gamespy dot com. Maybe you'll get your name on the famed PlanetDiablo site!
