It
seems that the Mailbag has taken a turn for the biweekly
format. Hopefully, this way you won't have to keep coming
back for small bits every week, but instead for larger
chunks. Unfortunately, this week has been rough seeing
as how the week before this one's email was deleted
in a recent format of my hard drive (due to an unexpected
virus). I tried to salvage as much as possible, but,
alas, the emails could not be saved :(
Instead of postponing the Mailbag this week for the
few emails that were received, I decided to go ahead
and post them. You need your regular dose of Mailbag--and
we need a new topic dished out as well...
Enough of my discourse...onward!

Subject: The Bantering of an Old Grouch
A long-time player of the first
game, I finally bought Diablo 2 yesterday. I stayed
up all night, pumped my shiny little Paladin up into
the teens, beat the snot out of Andariel, and went to
sleep. Lut Gholein was going a bit too slowly for my
tastes. I figured I'd take said Paladin online, see
what Battle.net was like these days, and try to rack
up more experience.
I was downright disgusted. I figured that perhaps I'd
just landed in the wrong channel at the wrong time,
and so I hopped into a game. Sadly, it continued. A
level 9 sorceress in full plate armour with a huge staff
was laughing her head off, as a level 94 Necromancer
chased down a level 12 Barb, who kept whining about
needing people to hack stuff for him.
I'm not going to complain about the cheating. We all
know people who do that are idiots, and only ruin the
game for themselves. What I want to point out, and laugh
at, are the people who beg other people to 'hack' stuff
for them. And these people are everywhere. What kind
of pathetic morons, are so horridly lazy that not only
are they not willing to even try to play the game as
it was designed, but they have to get other people to
cheat _for_ them?
Even that, I guess, would be okay on it's own, if they
were intelligent enough that they got mad when you told
them how stupid they were. But they aren't! I told said
barb, and a number of people back in the chatroom how
stupid they looked, and the limit of their response
was, "NO I NOT STUPID U R STUPID U STUPID HEAD!". There
is no joy in mocking someone who isn't capable of realizing
the fault being pointed out.
The only solution (Other than playing offline, or in
closed Realms games) I can conjure up, is that those
of us with IQs above 10 gather in a dark corner somewhere,
out of view of these morons, hold hands, and pray for
the horrible blazing deaths of the offenders in question.
Yeah,
I have encountered those same types of players--but,
what can we really do? Battle.net is a free service
which doesn't require an entrance exam, so what we can
do is just ignore annoying individuals (unless they
actually perform a malevolent act) and keep quiet. Calling
them insulting names isn't that much smarter.
If you're on the verge of becoming a Buddhist monk to
find that peace, then I suggest you traverse into the
Realms. Although there won't be outright cheating there,
you probably won't be able to escape the filthy talk
of "l33ts."

well.. i have been having some
problems with my game.. i get kicked off battle net
before i even get to play now. and before that.. it
was telling me it could not find my 30 lvl player. i
dont get to play that game all the time. so thats a
high level for me.. kinda makes me mad i payed that
much money for a game.. and i cant play it. i know its
not my isp cuz i play more Half Life then anything..
and that pings and runs fine for me at anytime in the
day. i wish you would do something about this.. cuz
i would like to play that game. not worth the 50 bucks
i payed for the game.. i feel ripped off.. this all
just started not to long ago... maybe a few weeks ago.
and whats with the game running like crap? i have a
p3 500 with 128 mgs of ram.. and it chops so much in
single player... but i can run Quake 3 with no probs..
i have a 32 mg Ati rage 128 too.. just thought you should
know that i think that game sucks a big one. have a
nice day. and thanks for taking my 50 bucks..
We're by no means Blizzard Entertainment, or its affiliates,
but what I can say is that the game runs a bit choppy
because you're playing from your CD-ROM. Of course not
everything depends on the RPMs of your CD-ROM, but it
is a big element of the game's performance. I suggest
your download Patch 1.04 if you already haven't.
As I stated before, Battle.net isn't a 100% uptime server
system--especially with all the recent power outages
and the like.

Subject: binkw32.dll
Do you know binkw32.dll? I have
some problem with it. When I install diabloII on my
new windowsMe, it tell me that I have no binkw32.dll.
I never found such a problem before. Please help me
to solve this problem. Thank you very much.

I recommend that you reinstall Diablo II altogether.
The file can't just disappear :)
