Back to school!

Well kiddies, it's the 27th of August and as we enter that sometimes distasteful academic year, we move on to this week's "sack o' mail." This week we have a large amount of random feedback and only four topic-related emails...

But that's ok!

Our Next Topic Will Be:

How do you feel about modifications for Diablo II?

Share your thoughts on ideas for some and/or the probable impact on the community resulting from the production of them--as well as what you think the pros and cons would entail such a "MOD" in terms of creation and distribution.

As always, please send all feedback on this topic or any other to feedback@planetdiablo.com.

Now on to the feedback on last week's topic in which we asked you about your hardcore character's death experience and the circumstances surrounding it; here's what you guys had to say:

Subject: New Mailbag - HC Stories

Hi, as I do have a hardcore character I will take the time to write a small story of his _cheesy_ death. You see my 40x CD-Rom is how shoud I say "Yah toute décolisée" (note: that is in French) [Mais oui!]. In English I mean that my CD-Rom is not working and I can only use my Burner witch is alot slower (24x). Now when playing D2 everything is fine except for the very few times where it skips, that is what I call it anyway. What I mean by skipping is that it stops completely to load everything afterward at an extremely fast rate, it's like if after the skip loads I can run about twice as fast for the amount of time it skipped. Usualy it happens on the death of a unique like Izual for example. Once Izual dies I actually have no idea of the animation of his death but it skips every time.

Now to teh death of my character. Here I am doing a 1vs1 agaisnt Izual and once his life bar ran out my kick ass burner decided to put on a show and skips for me. After the load my char is caputsky and dead on the floor.

Hayoo, what fun.

Ow. That's a kick to the stomach. My advice: don't use a CD burner as your primary disc device...

While I can understand your love for Diablo II and how you can't stop playing it...you must also realize that finding out and/or fixing your CD-ROM is more important---especially when your burner is acting this way.

Another hardcore character lost in vain...

Hey, now I know that we can't cuss too heavily, but oh well! I have a nice little story for ya, Mr. Mailbag Root person [Alas, that is not my title. Now get this right Mr. Sharky fledgling person: I am Root, Mailbag Champion! Master of this here Mailbag. A champion damnit! Got that? Ok, I'll shut up now]: I was level 24, playing with two other people. I didn't know the two, but they seemed like nice people. (As they always do) We were going to kill the little floating ghost guy with a funny shaped head, Mophisto. We made our way past the Counsil and into the temple. I already had a close call with the counsil, and I was pretty much going to let my companions take Mophisto's anger, while I was out of the way, shooting him with Bone Spear. We entered the last chamber when we all decided to go to town so we don't get blown up. I was a stocked up on healing potions and went back through my TP. Suddenly, they both went hostile on me! The last checkpoint was right by the stairs to level 3. I already had cleared most of the room of Mophisto's little buddys, and then came in my "friends." I didn't care, I wasn't going to take any chances, so I hid where they couldn't find me. They ran into Mophisto but ran like mad to get away from him---the cowards! They spotted me, and I ran a little while, killing one with my blood golem and bone spear. I thought that I would have a chance with the other one since he was barbarian, and if I could run and cast spells, he couldn't get me. Too bad for me he had a high level leap attack and smacked me a good one. He had only about 30 hp left when he did his leap attack again and killed me! I was just like Damnit! Dam...I mean Darnit! Darnit! Darnit! oh well, he got killed by Mophisto so I wasn't totally mad. I thought that it would be lag that killed me, not a stupid barbarian! I got revenge on them the next day with my level 35 necromancer. They were trying to kill a lower-leveled sorceress when I totally kicked their butt! =)

Silly mortals. But justice has been served.

No, I'm not a mortal...I'm Root! The Mailbag Champion! <End>Arrogant/Narcissistic bickering</End>

Well I just had to share the on of the most anticlimatic deaths I ever encountered.

I was playing as a necro and I had managed to reach Andariel. I was using a nice crossbow and had concentrated on summoning skills and as allways, Andariel had wiped them out easily so I had to use my meager Xbow to take her out.

I didn't have a very nice poison protection so I had to run around at 1 health most of the time until the poison passed and then drink potions. It was one of those times then that I runned near a fire...

The message "Player was killed by fire" really sucks! :)

Indeed it does suck to perish via a mindless object (Religious groups back off! I own a shiny billy club! [which I have previously used to ward off evil politicians, lawyers, and various others.])

Hardcore death story: I was a hardcore sorceress, level 17, I was REALLY CLOSE to level 18 where I get some better spells like glacial spike and chain lightnong and stuff. I was saving up some skill points for those. I was getting good lag, as I had been since they upgraded USEast. So I was walking around in some desert area in Act II and fighting those annoying cat things that throw potions. I saw a hero thing of those potion cats and realized i was running out of health, and fast! So I started to run away and I hit one of my belt healing potions, nothing happened! I was still losing health! So I hit it again and the same thing happened. By now I was smashing all the number keys trying to use potions, but it was too late. I heard *uugghh* and it said "You have died, blah blah blah." Then I sat there with my jaw dropped (it was my first HC char) and after maybe 15 seconds it said "Connection Interrupted." I HATE LAG!

Wait. Back it up. Near the beginning of your paragraph, you stated a somewhat paradoxical comment: "I was getting good lag." In lux of your last sentence, "I HATE LAG," this would make sense---but, unfortunately, it does not.

First of all, "lag" is not a measurement of connection loops. That's "ping." Lag is the is a negative thing my friend. "good lag" is unheard of in the known world. So, I suggest you start using "good ping" instead.

Lastly, considering your "good lag" statement to mean "good ping" -- why do you conclude with "I HATE LAG?" Also, not all interrupted connections are due to lag.

In any case, be nice to your keyboard and don't smash it. They have feelings just like you and me. No! Don't you talk back to me! Forget Diablo, this is a matter of keyboard abuse--a serious problem emerging in the world today--along with stale tacos and improperly processed toothpicks (which are already the leading cause of SIGS [Splinter In Gums Syndrome])

Oh yeah, and sorry about your character!

Can you believe that was the last of the topic-related emails? Well, I sure did. Wait...um..nevermind. Luckily, we always have the random blah, so get that pointing device moving in a roughly southeasterly direction from this sentence towards that link to the next page!
