PlanetDiablo | Features | Mailbag | What's your favorite Act?

October 22?

Yes, it is October 22 and what better way to celebrate the day than by catching up on the latest Mailbag? Ok, minus the alcoholic beverages.

Anyway, I apologize for last week's absence but I apparently misjudged the prominence of wormholes on my premises--stepping in to one as I was battling a group of eight-year olds for a dust-ridden lollipop. Luckily, I was led back to my rightful dimension via the aid of three rugged Eskimo leprechauns who claimed to be Donald Trump's offspring and who thrived on a rough diet of shoelaces.

Now that that's off my built chest, let's get on with what you came to see...

Next Week's Topic Will Be:

What would you particularly like fixed with Patch 1.04? (Other than the obvious). Include fantasies if applicable!

Send us your thoughts!

Now on to the feedback on the week prior to last week's topic in which we asked
you which Act, in your perspective, holds the most interesting environment and why (Disregarding the fact that Diablo lies in the last Act)? Are there particular fiends or terrain features that particularly catch your eye each time you traverse through it? Do specific creatures look especially spooky? Here's what you guys had to say:

I think Act 2 is the most pleasant to play. Nice graphics, especially inside the tombs, interesting and challenging creatures, without many that are truly annoying. Arcane Sanctuary and the Harem are both nice looking and different in terms of strategy. Lastly, the Act 2 Blacksmith's not as cute as Charsi, but she heals me, so its about even.

I've seen Act 1 too damn many times to like it much. Graphics are fairly boring. Monsters are boring, but what can you do for low-level anyways? The Keep is better, but doesn't make up for the rest.

Act 3 is hard to look at, hard to see what's going on under all the damn trees. The Fetish are a pain in the ass and just not much fun to fight, and the Jungle areas are soooo damn long! Temples are kinda neat but not as nice as Act 2. Hate is cool, but level 3 is a goddamn joke, with all the lag caused by the vampires castin' firewalls, meteor strikes and the unique Council Members either casting tons of hydras or being lighting enhanced / teleporting... I usually die a few times just from lag. Mostly I guess I hate the trees and them damn blowdart blowin' bastards that keep runnin' away.

Act 4 is neat, although it could be a little more hellish-looking I think, and its kinda small. Unfortunately, too many real annoying monsters like Hoppies and bugs here. Oblivion Knights and Flesh Spawners hit hard but that's fine, I dont have a problem with hard or challenging, I just don't like annoying or pointless (killing 234284 bugs for 0 exp). My biggest complaint about Act 4, is the tons of CRAPPY JEWELRY! What the hell?? I can fill up my cube multiple times with garbage jewelry and never find even a halfway decent piece. Rings of light? Dex +1?? Not for my 48th level character, thanks.

So that's it. Act 2 roxx. (Now if we were talking loot or money... then Act 4 for sure. Nothin' beats headin to town every 5 minutes with 50k worth of armor & staves to sell!)

Fair enough. Don't get me started with bug-smiting, however--I'm already on medication...

Without a doubt, the most interesting terrain in the entire game has to be the River of Flame. I mean, who didn't admire in awe the sea of lava the first time they saw it? Plus sometimes tortured souls briefly rise out of the lava before settling back down into it; it looks great. I can't wait til I go to Hell!

The River of Flame is eye-candy, but I don't think one has the benefit of Bone Wall or Whirlwind in the real-afterlife...

I think that the second act was the best. I mean it was the most well put-together act. To prove this, i'll go act by act and say why i thought it was inferior.

Act 1

This was an ok act, but it focused mostly on monsters seen previously on diablo, and the storyline of basically being the sister's bitch and saving everything for them kinda gets old. I mean no wonder they lost, they use freakin bow and arrows only!

Act 3

This was ok, but the storyline kinda seemed..... off. I mean the entire thing wasn't held together well, although this one certainly did put your ability to the test.

Act 4

This is my second favorite act. Unfortunetly, it's short, but it's compact. I mean when tyrael realized how he had been betrayed into turning the prime evils stronger, that was a really strong part, and really pist me off. Then when you go and shatter mephisto's stone and get the buttload of gems. Although the "Lord of Terror" was something I have beaten without any weapons or armor, it was still an ok ending. The video was magnificent, and worked seamlessly into the end.

And now Act 2

This is best IMHO because of its storyline. I mean you get there, and after proving yourself, you have to go out into the desert to find and save Tal Rasha from Diablo. The scenary is magnificent, especially the bones and huge human heads jutting out from the landscape. Then the monsters, I mean come on, those guys really can freak you out. The scores of corpses being raised, the huge beatles or the ultra-gross worm/slug things reproducing in front of you, that's sick, and nasty(both having other meanings, you can pick and choose the ones you want:P). Then there's the fact you can actually get decent weapons in this part. That's all I have to say of the matter, hope it helps!

.
Two votes for Act II and counting.

Mailbag

yo, planetdiablo, sup, i reckon that for one those flesh beasts and the 'wyrm' things, same looking creatures anyway are prob one of the freakiest looking creatures, i mean to see this little worm of a thing with arms and that is sick enough, then to see the 4-leg things spit them out is amost just as disgusting, i mean that's just sick, but if u want to know which ones are teh most annoying? u've got my vote for the fetishes and the flayers, pardon me BUT THOSE LITTEL F**KS ARE ARSEHOLES, they all must die!!! and in comparison to ja-jar binks, tose littel f**ks are worse, in fact i had no problem with jar-jar but those f**kin fetishes are [explicit], not to mention the doom knights and the doom knight shaman things, f**k they piss me off, but as far as terrain is concerned, act 2 was pretty cool, i dodn't much like act 3, but act 4 was not too bad i liked the trapped souls.

Ahh, it's people like you that keep me going. For that I salute you. On the other hand, the overall message of your ramblings was this: I hate fetishes and those other thingies. I need to stop acting like a youngon at a candy store and breathe before I think.

Act2 honestly has the most impressive abience, town, and design. Lut Gholein alone is so huge and beautiful, with tons of areas to drool over the fine detail. One such example is the tavern, because quite frankly, where else in the game is a useless part of town so ridiculously elaborated? The palace speaks for itself, including the floors below it, and the selection of colors to fit the mood of the once vastly populated halls and rooms. Also, if you pay close attention to the tombs of Act2, many unique inscriptions are engraved all over the walls, these are not repeating textures; many vary! And finally, how can you not gawk over the overwhelming tomb of Tal Rasha? the fact alone that an FMV movie and the actual game graphics are clearly distinguishable, make the chamber all the more eye-candy.

So really, I would almost go so far as to debate that the Blizzard team took much more time creating Lut Gholein over the other towns, although I cannot be certain. It is clear, though, that in no other act, so much attention is focused into the fine little details; the Tavern, Palace, Tomb Walls, Tal Rasha's chamber..

The other acts simply cannot compare with this sort of time consuming craftsmanship, and why else would Lut Gholein be the fold out peek into the game on the Diablo 2 box itself? Simply because, it's most well done!

I agree. Deserts strike my fancy, and Blizzard stroked it for me numb...wait...err...nevermind.
