I know that a lot of people have been bummed out about this whole hacking/duping deal on the Realms. A lot of people have been trying to get away from Diablo II and jump onto new games and trying out different stuff. Last week, I was talking about how there are alternative Diablo II game play modes out there. Every week until the Realms shape up, I will post out a new mod review, so that people who are bored of the Realms, becoming super bad will just have a little different taste of Diablo II.
Ancestral Recall is a modification itself, offered by Teknokyo. Descendents of the Dragon is an extended modification of Ancestral Recall. It offers new animations and lots of new unique monsters. Descendents of the Dragon (DotD) just extends Ancestral Recall (AR), so you would have to beat the entire game (Normal, Nightmare, and Hell) before you start playing this mod. Basically, it is Hell only.
When you start off, you only have three waypoints in Act I and Act II, one in Act III and Act IV, and two in Act V. All of the exits from the towns are closed, off so you can't go anywhere outside of the waypoint areas. Basically, the best place to go is Act V and start from there. New animations are shown when you go down and fight the barbarians.
AR is known for its uber drops! Since DotD is a Hell only modification, you get elite unique item drops. All of the elite unique items are dropped for your enjoyment.
You might want to get to a high enough level so that you won't get killed in DotD; the monsters get very tough. You really need to have high resistances, even absorbance, so that you won't get most of your life drained.
There are basically three areas of actual game play. All of them have new monsters. The monsters have new and old skins which you might like. Still, I was a little disappointed with the mod a bit: I was expecting more from Teknokyo. The extended mod is a great idea, but I needed more game play.
Is it worth the 10MB Download? Only to true, die hard fans of Ancestral Recall and the people who actually have beaten the entire game of Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
After a much needed vacation from work, I was happy to get back on the forums this past week and really dig in. Unfortunately, there was a little house cleaning that had to be taken care of, but I must say that the "State of the Forums" is strong! [Cute. -ed.]
This past week, we had several "X of the Year Topics" in the ever popular Off Topic forum. These ranged from spammer (boo...hiss), poster, moderator, and topic of the year. Check them out and cast your vote if you haven't already. There are too many to post a link so I will go ahead and point you to the Off Topic forum.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to announce that there may be a couple of "events" coming to the forums in the next several days. I am still working them out with the other moderators, and in fact, I am pulling one off the planning table tomorrow and pitching it... so stay tuned!
For those of you who haven't seen the forums, I urge you to come check the community out. We have different boards for nearly all needs related to the game, and even a couple to just talk about aspects of the game in general or even things that have nothing to do with Diablo! The community is extremely friendly and enjoys meeting new people.
This week, one topic of personal interest was brought up, concerning the MMORPG EverQuest. With Blizzard doing Beta sign-ups now for Warcraft III, and eventually for World of WarCraft, this is a topic that will surely come back around again and again.
